    NCL Jade cancels Egypt/Israel

We booked to go on NCL Jade in January going to Egypt and Israel but we have been informed it has been cancelled. Not sure how many others this will effect.

Norwegian Cruise Line has important information for you regarding Norwegian Jade’s 10-Day Eastern Mediterranean and 11-Day Mediterranean & The Holy Land sailings departing Rome (Civitavecchia) from 26 November 2011 to 11 April 2012.

As you may know, there has been political unrest in the regions visited on these itineraries. As a result, we are reducing the number of cruises we offer to this region and therefore, cancelling the above mentioned sailings. Norwegian Cruise Line sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by these cancellations and would like to thank our guests for their patience and understanding.

I have just been looking and it seems to have disappeared from their system !

I will give them a call tomorrow. Trouble is my cheap flight that I paid upfront for doesn't seem so cheap now :-(

When the troubles first started, in January, NCL Jade immediately removed to Istanbul for the overnight stop she would have had in Alexandria. I haven't heard that she returned to Alex, and I think she's now moved to Venice for the summer season.
It's a bit premature for the company to announce that the winter trips will not be to Egypt, but this ship attracts many US customers for the winter Med cruise, so perhaps they need an early reassurance before they book.

After phoning NCL which I booked cruise only with it seems it is more a case of the cabins not selling than any troubles that may be going on in that area !

When I pointed out it was still safe to sail in October but then suddenly unsafe in November they offered to refund my flights even though I booked them independantly.

It seems they will probably be sailing around the canaries instead so I may just switch my booking. All in all NCL seem to be on the ball at the moment with their dedicated phone line and small OBC offer or of course a full refund inc flights

NCL have a big problem with Jade...when she was removed from Hawaii, they had to promise that she would not return to US waters (I don't understand all the reasons behind this, but the 3 ships in Hawaii were registered to America and had to have about 90% American staff on board.
Poor Jade ended up doing cheap cruises from Southampton, with lots of Brits attracted by the very cheap fares, and not understanding that cheap=big tips. From what I saw, and reading the reviews, many Brits removed these tips....I saw the massive queues.
NCL had to use Jade in the Med over winter, and people reported back about rough seas, wind and rain...we had snow in Turkey, and floods in Alex.
The winter cruise I was on did attract quite a few Europeans, but otherwise it was 80% Northern Americans. The balcony cabins were fairly useless in the bleak weather, and lots- including ourselves-said they'd been a waste of space in winter.
NCL ships in Europe seem to change around much more than other lines, and I think no-one really knows what to do with the banished Jade.
I love her, and would do the winter cruise again, but inside, and with several fleeces and macs.
    Jo.

I think you are correct about the Jade. I remember some of the rediculously low prices when it sailed from the UK.

On my roll call I was the only Brit and if it switches to the Canaries I can't see many Americans flying over !

I must admit it was the original price that attracted me even when taking into account the grats and speciality dining it was a really good deal. We are going with friends and before we booked I said add £500 on top for the extras.

But I am rather suprised they are offering to refund flights when we booked cruise only and they have no obligation to do so.

I love Jade too! Is there any chance they would homeport her in the UK for the winter and compete against IOTS, possibly homeport in Dover??!!!?? That would be great!!!. More than likely she will return to Barcelona and do what she has been doing for the past number of years - Canaries. Morocco, Malaga and Madeira. If they have shied away from Egypt and Israel, they may opt out of Morocco too - then I think she might include Lisbon, Cadiz, Cartegena, Gibraltar etc. Only thinking out loud here.

Whatever, I do feel some very good deals coming up over the Winter as they try to fill her with short notice!

We got the Jade last October on a 7 nighter for $449 and a $50 OBC per person. We got Ryanair flights for €78. VTG gave us another OBC of $25pp so that covered most of the tips. We didn't use the Speciality restaurants save one (Papas Italian Kitchen) as we tried these on the Pearl. We paid €34 each for an apartment in BCN prior to the cruise. Our shore excursions were all DIY but cost €12 in Nice/Monte Carlo; €14 in Pisa / Forence, €9 in Rome, €14 in Palma, €23 in Naples / Pompeii / Sorrento. We did not visit any museums in any of the cities except in Barcelona where we visited the Casa Mila and the Sagrada Famillia and that set us back €33 each. Our entire holiday cost €636 - only thing not included was €36 bus from home to Dublin airport and what few euros we spent on coffees etc on shore. We had a great holiday door to door for less than €700.
Our saving grace is that if we never saw a drop of alcohol onboard it would not trouble us. We do not buy photos etc. I take loads of pictures from out trips and I use Photo book, photo service, photo gifts, Pixum to create a 50 page photo book which makes a great souvenir of the trip.
Heres to the Jade and long may she continue plying the seas. I hope the keep moving her onto different itineraries so I can see more of the world on a great ship!

My only experience of NCL was the Dawn which we were so disappointed with in comparison to what we paid :-(

But if I get a cheapy I have no huge expectations and know the ship will be fine for a winter break wherever it ends up. The canaries wouldn't be my first choice but hey ho it sure beats work :-)
