P&O wins world class ferry award

Cruise operator P&O has been awarded first prize in the Leading Short Sea Ferry Operator category at the World Travel Awards 2010 in Antalaya, Turkey.

Many European destinations and companies were recognised at the ceremony with Lisbon taking the title of Europe's Leading City Break Destination.

Leading lights of the travel world came together to compete at the most important event of the year for European tourism.

Simon Johnson, tourist sales and marketing director at P&O Ferries, said: "We're delighted to have been named best cross-Channel ferry operator at the 2010 World Travel Awards. It's always rewarding to gain recognition from our travel and tourism industry peers for providing the best service to customers from the booking stage through to the on board experience."

The host nation Turkey also picked up a number of top awards including Leading Luxury Resort, Leading Luxury Hotel and Leading Tourist Board to name a few.

Norwegian Cruise Line scooped the award for best Leading Cruise Line at the ceremony.

P&O Cruises does not operate or own P&O Ferries and the two companies are totally separate.
P&O Cruises is part of the Brtish/American owned Carnival Corporation.
P&O Ferries is owned by DP World, based in Dubai.

It is therefore wrong to say "Cruise operator P&O has been awarded......"

    Inappropriate?

Following on to Brian’s correction I would like to say that this has come at a very auspicious time for P & O as they have just finished sailings from Portsmouth. The crews are now being buses to Hull etc in the NE so that they can work from there, rather than making them redundant. This means that some of the crew who live in the Southwest have a huge journey via Portsmouth before they start work. I would have thought that this warranted looking into for safety reason alone. .......Neil

May not be the case now BUT in the past they were one and the same company,I know cos I worked for the ferries and the parent p&O albeit a few years ago now,and they were very good employers.
I dont know the actual facts, but on P&O pulling the "Pride Of Bilboa out of portsmouth, did not the company offer alternative employment in Dover.?
people need to get off their backsides and look for work, whilst working on the ferries i used to have to travel from Felixstowe up to preston and cairnryan to join ships, and after being made medically redundant from seagoing employment,i found work in the middle east.

I listened to the report given on Radio Solent and there was no mention of alternative works offers in Dover, merely that the crew were being bused from Portsmouth to Hull to start their tour of duty each time there. Many had many miles to drive before getting to Portsmouth.. ....Neil

I sailed as a passenger many times on the pride and the majority of the crew other than officers were from bilbao,so it may be that the spanish crew were paid off and those that you mention were mainly officers and those senior ratings that were portsmouth based.
its unfortunate ,but as the UK Mn is being slowly decimated by foreign flag ships and crews our seafarers have to hunt high and low for work.
