Smile Greenwich to get a cruiseline terminal

Plans for London to get its first cruise liner terminal have been approved by Greenwich Council.

Construction of 'Enderby Wharf' will begin at the end of 2011 and is expected to be complete by 2015-16, but developers hope the cruise terminal will be completed in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Once complete it promises to provide a docking for cruise liners and the Thames Clipper, along with a 251-room hotel and 770 new homes.

As part of the plan, Enderby House, a Grade II-listed building, will be extended to provide tourist, community and retail facilities.

James Blakey, planning director at West Properties, said Greenwich was chosen out of 11 possible sites across London.

"The area has a rich maritime history and Enderby House was referenced in Moby Dick.

"At the heart of the proposals is the provision of an international cruise liner terminal in the maritime heartland of Greenwich and London."

Only one Cruise ship in at a time, I would have thought they would need at least two, three would be ideal, But one is better than none.

Great news for me only a 10 minute direct bus ride from home. Should be able to take liners upto 1500 passengers. Also planned is a cable car from Greenwich peninsular to the Excel centre in docklands. Both plans are subject to approval by the Mayor of London.

Great news for us as we can easily get a bus, train or taxi to Greenwich.

    Let's hope it actually happens.

Better Days: Dover has two very nice cruise terminals, one relatively new.

I was under the impression that Tilbury (The London Cruise terminal) was being re-developed? It used to have it's own train station and a big Hotel.

How long will it be before Southampton starts complaining? If they don't want a terminal in Liverpool how will they react to one in London?

From a transport viewpoint Tilbury is a better site if its developed.
