As a retired engineer I always carry a small multi-tool kit with me ( I have been known to change batteries for fellow pasengers up to repairing my own Laptop). 2 months ago boarding the Queen Victoria at Southampton and I was asked to show the penknife that I had in my hand lugage. When I couldn't find it they told me exactly where to find it. It turned out that they only wanted to check it wasn't a locking type. The one thing I always do is to make sure I don't mind having it taken from me if they get awkward. So I never take my prefered toolkit, my Leatherman.

I have always taken a Swiss army knife because it also includes a bottle opener, screwdriver, corkscrew and other gadgets which have come in use at some time or another. It hardly takes up any space but I would be lost without it.
On our first cruise when sitting in a cafe in Tenerife the screw in my wife's glasses glasses arm was lost. I picked up a match whittled it and screwed that in place. They must make good matches there because when she eventually binned them the whittle was still there.
