    What's In Your Luggage ...?

What do you pack when you go on your cruise holiday? Clothes, travel documents, shower gel perhaps?

Well, the picture above shows an array of items which have been seized from passengers boarding a cruise from Southampton. As Captain Greybeard points out in his blog: The handcuffs may be used for a bit of fun but why would someone bring a stanley knife onto a cruise?

You might say that security for boarding ships does not appear as thorough as when travelling through an airport, Southampton port's operations and security manager, Glen Gardner, says: " Cruise lines and the travel industry make it very clear that no knives, firearms replicas or items that could be used in a threatening situation are allowed."

CruiseSouthampton.com, who uncovered the haul on a recent visit to the port, point out that cruise passengers travelling through the city's airport face similar restrictions, and also have to be aware of the limits on liquids.

Have you ever been caught with something that you probably shouldn't have on a cruise? - or dare I ask ?

I'm not quite sure why they felt the need to confiscate the teaspoons, although I'm equally unsure why anyone would take them on to a cruise ship.

I like the individual cutlery set with imitation bone handles, I bet there were some crying children at check-in after those cowboy guns were taken away!

The pliers are rather odd too. Mind you I've never quite got over when OH's grandparents, now 90, stayed at a hotel about 8 years ago in which there was no hook on the bathroom door to hang your dressing gown. So his grandfather bought one and put it up. "Lucky I had my screwdriver with me." Eh?! They couldn't conceive that the hotel would be anything but happy with their actions.

I have a screwdriver in my handbag - same size as and in the same section as my pens and pencils.

It has been through umpteen security checks - airports and cruises and never been found.

I'm taking knitting needles on my next cruise. Have to be careful where I pack them!

My wife had a screwdriver confiscated from her hand luggage at the airport a few years ago. She'd completely forgotten it was in there, and was quite surprised when the security person found it.

We've never had a problem with more "personal" items, but then handcuffs aren't really our thing lol

My son bought his friend a lighter shaped like a gun which when you clicked the button it gave a mild electric shock. He thought it was hilarious but customs weren't so amused. (He did approach customs to show them what he had, he didn't try to hide it in his case). They took it of him. Some of those knives are a bit worrying though why would you want them with you?....................................Carol

My friend always takes a knife with her as she always buys fruit when in a port and is too scared to take ship's knives with her
