According to the CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) more than 10 million American's hit the seas last year.
Business Research & Economic Advisors, in its CLIA-commissioned economic impact study released today, noted the growth rate of US-resident cruisers peaked in 2004 at 13.9% then followed a downward trend through 2007 before turning negative (-1.7%) during 2008.
In 2009 the number of US-resident cruisers increased by 1.5%, offsetting most of the 2008 decline. Last year, with the 6.3% spike, was the highest growth since 2005, BREA said.
In 2007, US-resident cruisers numbered 9,452,000, a figure that dipped to 9,294,000 in 2008. The number inched up to 9,429,100 in 2009, then rose more sharply to 10,015,800 last year.
