I think my dad took me out one night to see the sky when I was very young but can't remember what the sky was like then. He was always talking about seeing the Northern Lights. I hoped that i would see them when I visited Scotland in the winter time, but never saw them. I have have put this down as one of many on my wish list. Maybe in late 2012 or early 2013. Some say that the trips by plane are spectacular if you are lucky to see them, but as with cruising it is the luck of the draw.

I've seen them a couple of times when flying back from Toronto. Also very faintly when we were in Iceland a few years ago. Spectaular and slightly eerie.

We did the Marco Polo Northern Lights cruise in Feb this year. Ok, it wasn't all plain sailing - we missed a port on the northbound due to the weather and 2 on the south due to losing time with the weather. It was disappointing but luckily we had great weather in Alta and the clear skies meant we had a fantastic display of Northern lights that started from about 8pm in the evening until 1 am. It was awesome. And, being late Feb we also got some daylight hours to explore the ports and surrounding areas and some stunning scenery.
    Would definitely recommend it.

I went (with Hurtigreten) in 2008 to see the lights. If you were at dinner, you relied on the bridge telling you when there was anything to see and so you rushed out without a coat! On the one occasion that the lights appeared, if you blinked you missed it - I blinked!
When I first heard that this winter would be good, I booked another trip - this one also includes two days in Tromso where we will be taken up to the plateau for the best view. So I am keeping my fingers crossed as the sight is definately on my 'to achieve' list.

We went to Alta last Feb. Ship docked at industrial area away from ambient light. Took a trip into the forest, saw the lights for two hours, then again on the return journey, had supper then had another couple of hours display above the ship (Marco Polo). Fantastic.

We were on a Northern Lights cruise Feb this year, as we were sailing around the Lofoton Islands on the way to Alta we heard there had been a fabulous display seen over Aberdeen and Inverness. Luckily we had a wonderful display at Alta. We got caught in a huge storm, most of our port calls were cancelled but hey, we saw the lights and for that alone it was worth it.
