Post Royal retreat: Compensation offered to deserted passengers

Royal Caribbean is now offering to compensate the passengers it stranded in San Juan after port authorities ordered the ship to leave three hours early to escape Hurricane Irene.

In a statement, the line said:

“As a gesture of goodwill, and in recognition of the time they missed on board Serenade of the Seas, Royal Caribbean provided each guest who was not able to arrive to the ship before it departed San Juan but met the ship later, with a future cruise certificate for 30% of the cruise fare paid for their sailing.

“We are in the process of contacting those guests who were not able to sail with us at all to inform them of their compensation, and would prefer that the impacted guests learn of the amount directly from the line before it is disclosed publicly.

“We are compensating these passengers because we understand that this was an unusual situation, and we want to provide our guests with another opportunity to sail with Royal Caribbean International in the near future.”

I think they had no choice but to back down. Initial decision was a terrible one in the first place!
It was either retreat or face a massive law suit and many customers walking to the competitors!

So it's 30% off a cruise- if you joined later- at your own expense.
The rest are waiting to be told.
I'd need 100% off a whole cruise, to make up for that dreadful shock of watching your ship sailing away, when you were on time....and all my expenses paying back.

It's not really compensation just 30% off of the price of another cruise, well what price are they discounting ? If it's full brochure price then you could end up paying more than just booking on the open market

Well it is a step in the right direction though if I had to pay air and hotel to get to the next stop than I'd expect a refund on that expense plus the 30 % while the passengers who had no direction and went home should be refunded for the full cruise plus.
The passengers who RCL put up and arranged transpot than the 30 % credit is fine though how they price it is another question.

Considering Carnival who is part of the same organization stepped up to the plate makes you wonder but another publication lesson learned

It had to happen , they really dented their image by behaving disgracefully but 30% is not a great deal on the passengers cost. CG

No they are not. They are two separately owned cruise lines.

I have a Cruise Credit for £300 from RCCL which have attempted to use in booking a future Cruise on 2 occasions through British agents without success.Being told that only £50 would be deducted against the Credit Note in short they are not worth the paper they are written on. The incident in San Juan under British Consumer law would be tret as a broken contract between passenger and the Cruise line. The onus for full repayment which would include all out of pocket expenses would lie with the Booking Agent.Taking this into consideration compensation could exceed 3 times the Cruise Fare.Part of the loss would be paid by the Credit Card provider.
