Post Airport body scanners to become compulsory

If you're a regular flyer, having your body scanned will soon become as commonplace, and as compulsory as showing your passport.

Panic ye not! New generation scanners will be ran by machines, so at least security staff won't be able to see the apparent ‘naked’ images of passengers, Transport Secretary Justine Greening said.

Ms Greening also said that she would carefully consider the EC report on the health risks of scanners, amid concerns that the backscatter scanner, which is being trialled at Manchester airport, emits ionising radiation.

The scanners have been trialled successfully at Manchester, with Heathrow and Gatwick.

They were bought in following the Christmas Day transatlantic flight incident when a would-be terrorist had an explosive device concealed in his underwear.

So when will they be installed? Well, according to Ms Greening, the precise timing of future installations of such devices is unclear - it depends on how quickly the new generation of scanners can be developed.

How do you feel about having your body scanned? Do you think they should have them on cruise ships too?

When he said he fancied a Magnum I dont quite think that's what he meant.

I went through one once and they said "Hello boys it's the Michelin Man"

Doesn't worry me, anything to speed up the process. If they were manned by people, they had planned the scanners to be the same sex as the persons being scanned and for them to be sat elsewhere so they couldn't link the scanned image to the passenger. That's anonymous enough for my sensibilities. I can't see them printing off my image and using it as a pin-up - I'm sure they will be glad to forget what they've seen!

    Cruising my way through life!

I read an article in the US and the machine was referred to as the 'nude-o-scope'.
    Only in the US!

Well they were polite enough not to laugh when I was body scanned at Miami airport on Saturday but what on earth made them pat down my hair? I have straight quite short hair so unless we are now being searched for nits can't see why it was done.

Speed up? There will probably be a very long queue to join!

Anyway is there not evidence to suggest that these machines radiation is dangerous?

    Now THERE'S a thought...a Nit-o-scope. The modern Nitty Nora.

Nope, won't work. It probably will 'infringe' Nits rights.
