Greece could be set to welcome more cruise holidays to the region in the near future, as reports suggest a number of international cruise lines want to develop ports in the region.

The Greek Islands have long been a popular holiday destination among British travellers thanks to their heady mix of warm temperatures and picturesque coastline.

With cruise holidays proving as popular as ever, reports now suggest that a number of international lines are eager to capitalise on the appeal of the region.

According to the Greek Reporter, "Royal Caribbean is interested in the ports of Thessaloniki, Rhodes and Iraklio, in addition to Piraeus".

The report goes on to add that cruise lines like Carnival, Costa, MSC and Celebrity have all expressed an interest in providing cruises to the port of Piraeus.

Much of these developments could rest on an investment in infrastructure projects at ports across the country though, with each of the cruise lines already linked with providing funding.

The recent economic and social unrest is also thought to be a concern, with lines eager to invest, if the market remains fully liberalised.

Greece could benefit from the recent boost in cruise holiday demand, after statistics revealed a rise of nearly ten per cent in bookings during 2011.
