Really sad when any ship goes down especially with a loss of life. RIP.

With regard to the causes/responsibilities I believe that the Captain has been arrested and charged with manslaughter. The question I might ask is what the Officer of the Watch was doing, or what the Navigator was thinking if/when the ship apparently deviated from her course?

I think we should wait for the Inquiry before we make comment about blame etc. At the moment we need to try to get alongside the bereaved in whatever way we can.
I read in an article ( possibly in the last link I posted, I have read so many I'm starting to forget where I read things) that stated the crew started to mutiny against the captain. Seeing as it has been reported that he left the ship early and refused to go back on, I would say if this is the case they must have shown their concerns and anger quite soon after the impact

Remember that on a ship the Captain's word is law and he has all the authority to deviate from the planned course. Few officers would dare contradict him.

A few thoughts in general: as accidents are so rare, there is not much to learn from previous ones; the idea that one returns to one's cabin to collect warm clothing & one's life jacket now seems suicidal; if a ship lists, surely that knocks out half the lifeboats; the CC had 26 lifeboats, so they would have been packed in like sardines anyway.

captain has been released from prison allowed home and is under house arrest

re the crew mutiny there is a bit here but it is mentioned on a few sites. It seems to confirm the crew were the ones to get people off the ship

I agree, on the ncl Jade my assembly station ( 4A ) was in the stardust lounge along with what seemed like 600 other passengers deep inside the ship. No way would I be going there if this had happened to us.

I have been very lucky in my life to have taken about 50 cruises - Cunard, Fred Olsen, P&O, Celebrity, Princess, RCI, NCI, Azamara - and ALWAYS without exception, the mustering has taken place on embarkation day. I am horrified to hear that Costa and sometimes MSC don't follow this rule on the embarkation day and will certainly not contemplate a cruise with either of these companies in the future.

On the MSC Opera last year the muster drill was done on the 1st day after leaving Amsterdam in the afternoon ..must admit found it a bit awkward as we had to go into the hall to hear the tannoy with information about anything & wait for your own launguage to understand ..i was expecting to hear it in our room as people mentioned hearing information in 5 different launguages all the time but we couldn't hear without going into the hall if we were in our cabin

I May Be Slow But I'm Perfect ....And I Went On The Opera On The 8th Sept 2011 And I Loved It Booked The Opera Again For The 23rd May 2012
