    Concordia Mystery deepens

I added this to an existing thread and then realised it really deserved its own. Sorry to add to the Concordia thread count though.

Well really, as Alice would say, it just gets curiouser and curiouser. It's a bit of a wacky Google translation, but read this latest from Corriere della Sera which seems convinced Costa Head Office knew what was happening and adds the prospect of an unknown Moldovan woman who wasn't on the passenger manifest being on the bridge at the time of the accident:
    Google Traduttore

and the British press have caught up now so here's a more readable report:

You couldn't make it up .......

This story seems like it shows typical bravado and showing off by a man or several men when in the presence of women they want to impress. It was, apparently, a well known detour, getting close to the Isola del Giglio, probably encouraged by the island’s “mayor” with Costa’s ships sailing close to the island.

This one seems to have had the added gesture of the Captain wishing to wave to or salute a retired captain who lived on the coast and that he knew. Playing games like this to impress a woman and this man was foolhardy to say the least and probably criminal, putting the ship, peoples lives and the immediate future of the cruising industry in jeopardy.

We men, at times have all done silly things in order to impress someone of a different gender, yes, or someone of the same gender too maybe, but this should have been totally excluded from any notion of anyone in charge of such a cruise ship.

In my first post on this disaster I said it was either an accident or a series of incidents caused by bad seamanship. The second reason keeps coming forward as the probable cause with the addition each day of more and more unlikely but astounding revelations. ….Neil

we will just have to wait and see,A huge gast 70x10 feet will allow a lot of water in ,very large free surface effect ship going at 15knts.His possible first major mistake was holding back on the abandon ship order,if the order had been given earlier most of the boats could have been launched whil the ship was still on a level keel.

    Just read this

    WHY DID THE SHIP TOPPLE?

Experts say it is standard practice for crews to try and steer towards the shore if they start to experience difficulties so that a safe evacuation can take place.

But the Costa Concordia never made it to the harbour and instead foundered on rocks and toppled over - making the escape of passengers even more perilous.

It is thought this was simply because the water was too shallow for the ship - which is the world's 26th largest passenger ship and weighs 114,500 tons - to stay upright.

There are also claims the captain gave the order for the anchor to be dropped as he tried to turn the ship around to the shore, which may have sped up the intake of water and led to it capsizing.

The secret of longevity is to start early in life..

I have read that the anchor dropping can be heard on coastguard videos so they don't believe the captain dropped anchor while turning.

Have just read the link Britchic, as you say a wacky Google translation, but I think I got the gist. Then I read your 'edited link', as you say 'curiouser and curiouser'.

As, I think many of us suspected, there is far more to this than the initial reports suggested. I am concerned, as I have said elsewhere, that the Company 'Hung him out to Dry' from the off. That is not the action of a responsible Employer. Frankly with their condemnation, I doubt he has much of a Defense, but their role in this is questionable, very.............................

There are so many theories at the moment, I just wonder if the truth could ever be ascertained.

The truth will be ascertained the plot can be reconstructed it is simple maths and looking at the damage to the Isle Del Scole will confirm where the damage occurred, not difficult to work out where she ended up as we have a satellite co ordinates position with speed and heading, now the only unanswered question is was it wind and current that put her on the rocks or someone using bow thrusters to turn her.
The black box will have a record.

    Unbelieveable isn't it.
Here's an interview with 2 sets of American passengers who basically had to get themselves off the ship and say they had no help from crew on the ship, on the island or -apart from actually being put in a hotel for the night - in Rome. This has been backed up by other passenger stories, costa basically left their international passengers without anything, not even a small amount of petty cash for dry clothes. The US embassy doesn't do well out of the story either.
