Post Costa passenger seeks €1m for miscarriage

A 30-year-old woman who was a passenger aboard the Costa Concordia says the disaster caused her to miscarry.

The female, who is currently being identified as Cristina M and her husband were forced to abandon ship after it ran aground last month.

Immediately after reaching safety, she called her health care provider who advised her to stay calm "because what was happening could have resulted in too much stress," she was quoted as saying in a report by Genoa daily Il Secolo XIX.

Cristina says she was five months pregnant when on 20 January she went to a Milan hospital where she miscarriaged.

Since losing her baby, she has filed a suit for a million euros in damages and compensation, claiming that the terror and trauma of the sinking provoked her miscarriage. She has also joined a class action suit against Costa Cruises.

As she was into her fifth month, it probably was the trauma of the situation that caused her to miscarry. How sad.

Very likely that the trauma was a major factor but not concusively so! My heart goes out to her and her husband! It is indeed so sad!
Cruiselines take passengers up to 24 weeks pregnant - perhaps this is not wise.

I know that pregnancy is a condition, not an illness, but why do so many women go away on holiday when pregnant? Is it to get one more holiday in before the baby is born? How selfish. They should stay at home and take care of themselves. There is plenty of time for holidays after a safe arrival.

maybe the couple thought that they were going on a nice, safe, relaxing cruise! It really did not turn out that way, did it, and I'm so very sorry for the couple, and for all the other people caught up in the Concordia disaster..

Im not a woman, nor a doctor, but it seems to me that a cruise would be the ideal type of holiday for someone who is pregnant. It's a stress free, relaxing holiday with all the cleaning and cooking done for you, in very pleasant surroundings, lots of entertainment and good company.

Pregnant women don't need to be wrapped up in cottonwool for nine months and I can't see how taking a holiday is selfish! There's certainly not going to be much time to take a holiday after having given birth.

Age does not bring wisdom. Often it merely changes simple stupidity into arrogant conceit. ;)

As so many people book their cruise far in advance it may be that the poor lady didn't know she was pregnant when she booked, and I'm not sure she would have grounds for cancelling just because she was pregnant. My heart goes out to her, especially as they may have been trying for a long time for that baby.
