Post New cruise terminal planned for Cornwall?

According to TTG, plans may go ahead to create a cruise terminal in Falmouth.

The controversial plans include the dredging of a channel through part of Falmouth Bay to open up the port to super-sized cruise ships.

If plans are approved, cruise passengers will be able to visit popular Cornish tourist sites such as Lands End, Padstow and the Eden Project.

Approximately 22,000 passengers descended on the port last year, from small to medium-sized cruise ships.

Cruise companies are reportedly keen to add Falmouth to their list of UK destinations.

However, conservationists are said to be up in arms about the plans. They argue that the dredging could devastate the bay, which is home to beds of maerl – a coral-like algae which is inhabited by a number of sea creatures.

George Osborne waded into the debate in November, using the refusal to give the go-ahead to the Falmouth project as an example of the “gold-plating of EU rules on things like habitats” which he said was placing ridiculous costs on British business.

He has since set up a government review looking at how EU directives are being applied in England, which is due to be published in March.

But conservation groups, including the RSPB, are worried that if rules such as those protecting Falmouth Bay are relaxed, other projects including an island airport in the Thames, could be approved too.

Do you live in the area? What do you think about the controversial plans?

This could be the beginning of the end. Once the Cornish have got their own cruise terminal they won't need us any more. Next they'll be blowing up the Tamar bridge and calling for UDI.

    I thought they already had!

What with a cruise terminal planned for Torbay, one at Lyme Regis, ships caling at Dartmouth and now Falmouth...........they had better start trotting out a few more 'Round Britain' cruises!

A rather nice way to see Britain. I think I'll wait until all these cruise terminals have actually opened though.

Hi Yes it's all going down here my'andsome's this has been on the cards for years, and has finally taken off, the enviromentalists are kicking off , apparently there is a patch of some sort of seaweed[ Dorset has a large amount of it ] and they are being fought on all fronts.
They would rather the seaweed than the jobs.
Our local MP has asked the government to to step in and see what's what and sure enough Geroge has stepped up to the plate, there is a large petition with thousands of names doing the rounds.
At the moment we have 27 ships on the stemming list, amongst them are Holland America, Grand Princess, Regent, to name a few who knows? I could become an ambassador and welcome some of you to Falmouth[ that's the name we give to the greeters who welcome the cruise ships in] and we'll even lift the embargo and let the 'emmett's' in. Surely you would not want to disturb the sacred Eel Grass beds - just think of the poor homeless seahorses

No - far better it is built in Torbay - we've had our grass mowed and Notices put up underwater that read 'Keep Off The Grass' - trouble is, the environmentalists sometimes can't read or swim!

As a fellow Grockle welcomer - and despite the friendly rivalry - I think Falmouth would make a wonderful cruise ship terminal. Goodness knows it has taken some quite large shipping in the past - by dredging you would merely be re-instating the seabed to its original levels.
