Interesting to see P and O felt they had to issue a statement. I would love them to say how many portions they actually provide. I watched a program recently where they were cutting thin slices of flesh off a fish that was still alive in a restaurant, apparently it is really popular with the diners but presumably P and O would draw the line at that. If they are only looking at suppliers how is the Foie Gras they are currently providing being produced? I would be very interested to hear how anyone can produce this so called delicacy in a humane way..Carol
Who was it that was foing the live fish thing, Carol? Just so we can make a note never, ever to eat there or in any other restaurant owned by the same people.

I don't think it is likely Boss, it was a restaurant in Japan, not a specific one, apparently it is a delicacy and is very popular. It was a sequence in a programme on the fishing industry worldwide so it caught me unawares as I usually "flick" channels when horrible scenes like that come on. I know that means I am burying my head in the sand but sometimes images like that just haunt you..Carol

Bad name, bad product, bad production

Maybe, P & O being proud of its British traditions, they should use the English translation of this product, ..........fat liver. ......I am sure that would soon diminish the number British traditional diners requesting foie gras. ....Neil

I wonder how many people really like foie gras and how many people order it because they've never tried it before and heard of it as a gourmet food.

I can't believe that a great number of P and O regulars would be up in arms if they didn't serve it.

Neil and yourself are so right. I had thought the fact that P&O had nearly all British passengers they should have realised it wasnt to our taste. I can understand that on ships that have an assortment of passengers from different parts of the Globe, there will always be some that dont care what they eat where it comes from and how it was produced. Not for me please P&O. Carol

I have remembered an incident at a table on one ship when the people were discussing lobster. They said that one restaurant removed the claws of live lobster before putting them in the tank so they did not fight. My response was how shocking or words to that effect (can't say what I really said or I would be barred from this forum). They just looked at me if I was mad and never spoke to me for the rest of the cruise. If people think it is all right to mutilate live animals it is a very sad world indeed.

    What would you not eat

Read an article in newspaper yesterday where a chef in New York restaurant was making cheese with breast milk.Yuk.
His wife was producing excess + it was filling fridge up so he decided to use it to make cheese,he said as his wife was vegan it tasted herbie.
He is not yet put it on menu but trialing it first.
Sorry to put you off your breakfast + being a bit off-topic.

How odd - I'm sure it must breach all kinds of food regulations. I feel the excess milk would be better used if donated to the local maternity unit for prem babies whose mums can't feed them.

Some years ago there was a law which said that all lobsters should have a spike driven through the head before they were immersed in boiling water. I think this fell by the wayside because it became impossible to police.

I would say, that in nature ,lobsters do lose claws and if I remember rightly they can grow another.

The thing that amazes me is that most people assume that if a creature has no voice or makes no sound that it does not feel pain. ....Neil

I love lobster. I had heard that about the spike also, it would be good if it really happened but same as you say ,impossible to police. Another one that I have heard about is putting them in a freezer till they are comatose. That shouldnt be so very difficult. But we will never know if they do! A little compassion and I would feel happier. Carol
