Fair point about the 'don't want to know' category, that's a cop-out which I find pretty hypocritical. I'm of the 'if you eat meat, you should at some point be prepared to kill and butcher an animal' school of thought. And yes, being from a rural Scottish community, I have done, specifically deer.

I've never claimed to know the full details of the meat production methods, I just try to do the right thing. Whilst it is obvious that the need for milk renders male calves a by-product it doesn't condone inhumane practices. My issue is with veal production overseas which is often reared in poor conditions and the poor labelling practices of meat in this country where it is hard to tell the origin of meat.

On this thread I am far more concerned with people not understanding what they are eating when they choose foie gras from the menu - it appears twice on the P and O menu.

I think you ought to be careful, I have heard that there has been an abnormal snowfall in Scotland. We wouldn't like you to slip off your soapbox and hurt yourself. There are so many topics that you could hold forth on in the Forum and to miss the pearls of wisdom would certainly be retrograde. ....Neil

Not sure where you're going with that one, the only question there has been whether the usual deer cull should go ahead, as the weaker ones have largely died already through 'natural causes' this winter. I'd observe that deer slaughter is probably the most humane of all, as they are legally required to be shot in open fields. So, one moment happily grazing in Perthshire, the next happily grazing in Brigadoon. However, probably ranted on long enough about the more squeamish carnivores now!

I'm so glad this was posted. I had no idea that P&O would be serving foie gras on Azura.

When I was on QE2 a couple of years ago, I was most disappointed to be told they no longer served it. The speciality restaurants on Celebrity serve the most amazing sautéed foie gras - it really is to die for. I will certainly look forward to trying it on Azura. Thanks P&O, long may they keep serving haute cuisine to the many Brits who enjoy fine food.
I'd guarantee if you were served a really good quality pate, produced without the horrific treatment of the geese, and well prepared and presented you wouldn't know the difference. P&O's profits would soar.

It is not neccessary to submit animals to such cruelty to satisfy the palate of holiday makers.

That's a fair argument. There's an excellent genuine French restaurant in Nottingham (French Living) where they do serve 'real' foie gras, and to my palate it's not noticeably different from standard goose liver paté. They sell both in their delicatessen, so a direct comparison is easy to arrange. One for the foodie snobs only, I suspect! :-)
