We visited the Black Sea on Thomson Calypso in 2008 and it was wonderful..Sevastopol, Ukraine; Nessebar, Bulgaria; Constanta,Romania; and Istanbul (sailing up through at night which was amazing, and stopping on the way down) ...of course Calypso has retired now but perhaps now the fees are reduced Thomson will look at revisiting this area in the future.

Hi Morris, can I ask what you thought of Constanta? We were due to visit there and it was removed from the itinerary and we were a little disappointed however we were told Constanta was Romainian for "stay on the ship" so we always wondered whether that was a fair comment, thanks Carol

Hi Carol....the port was huge and full of seemingly rusting cranes and hulls ...but it did seem to be working in parts...and there were some naval ships in port with activity on them. They had a big new cruise terminal with little going on.

We did a wine tasting trip...not that we wanted to buy wine but we thought it would be a good way of seeing some of the country !! It did seem very poor and way behind the times but we were taken to a 'resort' down the coast which had been given some money from the EU and had bought sunbeds and umbrellas which were all laid out carefully in rows on a beautiful beach, the gardens behind the beach were in the throes of being landscaped and it had the potential of being a lovely resort ...but there was not a soul anywhere !! Just our group having a quick coffee! This was June 2008 ! It was like they'd been given this helping hand from the EU but didn't really know how to market themselves as a holiday resort...

The wine tasting bit was OK and well organised, but there was little else there really.

it is also on my to do list. I've always wanted to go to the Black sea but as others have said it has always been so expensive. so it will be interesting to see the new prices.

don't want to work, just want to cruise.

Interesting comment on fees. Did the Black Sea on Victoria back in 2000 and have just pre registered for Adonia Black Sea in Sept. 2011. Price wise for 26 night cruise not too bad; it looks like a superb itinerary, and it would seem as though some of her other cruises have interesting (different) ports of call.
