Ah, but times are hard now Rob no money in the kitty, spending being slashed, where on earth is the 6.6 million coming from? We don't have enough police now to patrol the towns and villages. Take 800 out and what are we left with? Propshafts solution of using service personal I thought was a very good idea.CG

What a waste of money and Police Officers taken of your streets

As a retired Police Sergeant I would have been the first to volunteer for this jolly, a lot easier than going up for the miners strike, me and my team sleeping in a huge room with 250 cot beds!!

But being serious, what a complete waste of money --- this is hardly the Notting Hill Carnival where I was based throughout the 70's.

An extra 100 Police at most would do to Patrol and mainly traffic duties.

I was in charge of security at the Ryder Cup years ago with my ten merry men. Truth be known we wernt needed for crowd control, just for the traffic points. Its exactly the same for the Olympics ---- what a waste.;););)

    Hi Cornish Girl
We did use a mix of Troops and Police but of course our taxes will be used to pay the for the games.

JC - I'm not particularly bothered if your heart bleeds or not, if you have problems with Police earning overtime and how they do it hard luck.

This has nothing to do with the present overmanning and waste of resources if the report etc is accurate

If you want to make political points clear off to another site.

In the beginning a figure for the Olympics was given Tessa Jowell of about 2.375 Billion, of which London would contribute £625 million a figure which would only take the tax payers of London a mere 25 yrs to repay, and the balance of 1.5 Billion from the 12p the government take from the Lottery.
There was also a costing of £400million for CLM Consultants, a delivery partner evidently to make sure the games started on time and on budget.
What C.L.M do I don’t know but £400 million could spread around many consultants, I might be a cynic but what happens if C.L.M fail, and the games are over the budget of £2.375m? Do they give the £400 million of public money back?
It strikes me as incredible that a figure of £2.375 billion (say it slowly) two thousand million pounds, could be put forward, then in months figures of almost treble that are being bandied about, Tessa Jowell herself was professing a rise in the figures of 40% more.
Are these extras things that have been forgotten when first costing the event? Or is every jobsworth in the South wanting a piece of the pie?
One thing is for certain the tax payers of this country, the 90 odd% of all who will never get a chance to see any athletes in the flash, those same taxpayers who were never asked if we should host such event, will bare the brunt of the horrendous cost of the games.
Enthusiasts will say that Britain will make money out of the games, and I am quite sure the figures will be massaged to reflect at least a break-even price.
Sorry I just feel that this extravaganza is going to be another Millennium Dome a long lasting weight on the public purse, some say the tax payers are still supporting the Dome years after it was built and flopped, although I am sure the games won’t fail in the way that the Dome did.
While organizers (I don’t want to name names) and their ilk, will probably make lots of dosh through inflated wages, the tax payers of this overtaxed country will pick up the bill, and unfortunately not the people who will benefit the most from the games.

Typical response from an ex (anti democratic + humourless by the look of it) copper:mad:
Have you never heard of free speech? or its only free on your terms?
Debate my comment by all means, but throwing the above comments at me will will get you nowhere.
It may have been a political point in your mind, but in mine a valid point.

You are doing exactly what you are accusing what other people are doing. If it does not suit what you think, you go hammer and tongs at that person and not just only on this thread. I have noticed that you take great pleasure in winding people up on a lot of topics
