Ello, ello, ello... Proposed police cruise ship is creating a stir!

A dispute is reaching boiling point over proposals for hundreds of police officers to be stationed on a cruise ship at Portland Harbour during sailing events at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Organisers have put forward plans to spend up to £6.6m mooring a private vessel at Portland Harbour for the sporting extravaganza.

If approved, the 432-room ship would be filled by around 800 officers working over 67 policing days to protect 460 competitors from 61 nations in the Weymouth sailing events for the Olympics and Paralympics, to be spread over 35 square miles.

However, some officials fear that officers may misbehave which would, of course, cause public outrage against the use taxpayers money for the charter.

What do you think? Do you think we can trust a bunch of bobbies not to indulge on duty?

I'll be your deputy Helen. After all you can't stay awake all those hours. Then of course there is the press conference to attend to as well. I think we could have a few more to help us, with of course the Spartan line to bring up the rear to house the rest of the officials. This is due to the fact that we have taken their penthouse suites off them so that we can move into them.

I think I'll join you. I've already registered on the 2012 website and one of my chosen sports is sailing. I'll even do some policing for free.:D

I read this last week. When they did something similar off Vancouver it resulted in officers behaving as though they were passengers, getting drunk and losing their guns.

I can't see our police having a freeloading tab at the bar though can you? Far more likely to be billeted at some metropolitan university halls of residence.

    See link:
Olympic security team members sent home over 'unbecoming' conduct

quote: "“There’s been a lot of rumours and innuendoes about life on the ships for our security workforce,” he said. “I’d like to make it clear right here, right now — there’s been allegations of sex-trade workers being brought on the ship and so on — I can emphatically state today that that is absolutely not true

Quote: " announced by the RCMP Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit, Carnival Elation cruise ship will be one of three ships that will be chartered for the police force and security during the Winter Olympics at a tune of $76 million. Housing more than five thousand cops for the RCMP, the 2010 Vancouver cruise ships will also house troops during the Winter Olympic Games and the deal was finalized in April 2009

We ended up sending maybe less than 20 security folks home for various misconducts issues.
Considering we housed upwards of 5,000 security personal on the three ships, there was no problems

Can't see why they would be behaving any differently to being put in hotels - B and B's might be cheaper though - if they could find enough of them.

20 sent home so the rest were more carefull. How often do hear about a fling at an office party when theres only 20 or 30 people there. Put hundreds together on a ship in close proximity and IF SURE they will not misbehave. The 20 sent home were probably the tip of the iceburg. They are only human after all. I always remember my brother telling me he worked on a 50 strong night shift. Being sent home at 2 in the morning due to a power cut actually ended 3 marrages due to bums in the wrong beds. Splitting them up may help but as they say, there's always one.
