    Round Britain Cruises.

What would you list as the three main attractions, to attract cruise companies to call in to your home port.Living in Falmouth, and with the County full of history and folklore, I would suggest Flora day in Helston, this is held on the nearest Saturday to the 8th May(that,s the day we always sow our runners).

It's a lovely day out, to celebrate the coming of spring, it'd called the Hal-an -tor, St Michael slays the devil, St George kills the dragon, and the Cornish St Perrin arrives. All the while the ladies and gents dance through the town in lovely dresses and, it' hats, the first dance starts as early as 6,30 pm right through to the evening dance there is also the children's dance.

Now to lead these dances you used to have been born and bred in the town, and it is considered a great honour, the pubs do a roaring trade and the beer served in the Blue Angel, was especially potent and named Spingo, now ,I can no longer vouch for this with all the new h&S laws, but there are still plenty of pasties, cream teas and saffron cake to be had.

In the evening there is a large fair, bands and cheap jack stalls, its a lovely day with all the traditions played out. You might remember Terry Wogan's recording of the Furry dance, same thing. now I apologise if I have got anything wrong but I think I am accurate.

My 2nd Choice would be Falmouth week, the 2nd week in August, its a week of Carnivals, sailing regatta's RNLI displays, not forgetting the enactment of the civil war up at the castle and the guns booming out.

A large tent is erected in events square and there are different events every evening, such as 70's night, blues night's big band night, we might get a Tall ship, or a Royal Navy vessel and on Saturday comes the finale, with a big carnival, Samba bands and dancers ,and then the Red Arrows putting on a fantastic display , then the last event which is Caribbean night ending in a wonderful firework display.

    Third choice would be:

The Oyster festival which is in October, this is a three day event again this is situated in Events square. Well known Chefs are invited to attend this event, and they cook different dishes for all to try, the school children also try their hand at cooking, they have the oyster shucking which costs £1 per person for the oysters and the champagne which costs a little bit more There are also real ale tastings , and wonderful humour.Again we might have our adopted navy ship in port, RFA Mount's Bay, the sailor's parade through the town, and usually a tug of war, then into the old sea shanties.

Now these might be to quaint for cruisers, perhaps not sophisticated enough ,would they put Falmouth on the map who knows? Marie:D

I fancy the oyster festival myself, and my children would be fascinated, they love all kinds of seafood.
I live in the Midlands so I don't think any cruise ships will be interested in what's near me!

Cardiff has 2 castles, 2 cathedrals, St Fagans Folk museum and the new Cardiff Bay as well as the regal City Hall and Museum in the centre of Cardiff. The new St Davids shopping centre a must for shopaholics.

It all sounds lovely to me Marie and I would be spoilt for choice. We are doing a round Britain cruise next month but sadly, it's not calling at Falmouth.

My nearest port is Dover and a must would be Dover castle, especially Hellfire Corner, which consists of tunnels on 3 different levels within the cliffs, where the evacuation of Dunkirk was masterminded. It's an English Heritage site, so if you are a member then of course you don't pay an entrance fee.

I suppose if cruise ships stopped at Newcastle the main attractions would be beautiful Grey Street and the Quayside area. The Sage music centre, the Baltic art gallery (disappointing) and the Angel of the North. Following that passengers could take a trip to the fantastic Northumbrian beaches - beautiful bays with soft white sand and a castle every few miles but sshh! we're keeping them to ourselves!;)
we have a wealth of castles including Alnwick Castle (and Alnwick garden) which children will be interested in as it was the setting for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter film. Holy Island and Hadrian's Wall are other spectacular attractions. Then there's the mining and shipbuilding history!
Now, after saying all that, why do I ever want to go on holiday?....Oh yes, the weather might have something to do with it!

My nearest port is Greenock from there you could visit Glasgow of course with some of the best architecture in Scotland eg Rennie MacIntosh, Alexander 'Greek' Thomson etc. free admission to all art galleries and museums, the famout Barras and of course the best shopping. however instead of visiting a city and to gett a better feel of Scotland then the West of Scotland has the most amazing scenery...Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, Loch Awe, Oban, the whisky trail, the West Highland Way.

BTW the first two photos are Loch Lomond, 3rd is Loch Awe, 4th £255 bottle of Oban whisky! 5th Oban and 6th Seal colony near Oban.

Were they not planning on dredging the harbour in Falmouth to allow cruises to dock rather than tender? The other obvious attractions of stopping in Falmouth are excursions to Eden, St Michaels Mount and Penzance, St Ives and lots more besides. I have seen the odd cruise stop in Falmouth but never enough. When we were coming back to Southampton on the Ventura last year i thought how nice it would have been to have stopped in Falmouth the day before you get to Southamoton, would make a great last day of a cruise... ahhh Cornwall how I miss you :-)

    Lets here it for Falmouth

VVell said Cornish Girl. There is nothing better than Falmouth. The sail in and the history of Pendennis and St Mavves Castle, The Carrick roads and vievvs up the River Fal tovvards Trelissick, Cornish Cream Teas at Tolverne and seeing Big Ships up close and Personal. The charm of the local boatmen. A pint or to at the Chain Locker. 112 steps to climb up Jacobs Ladder. Did every day to go to school. Arvvenack House. Rick Steins Fish and Chips (Expensive but great taste) and vvho can resist Retail Therapy at Trago Mills!!!!

As to funding the third largest deep ater harbour in the vvorld, just ask the RDA about their expenses and their feasability studies, squandered shed loads of money and still no dredging.

Off up the Amazon in Feb 2011and maybe Northern Lights vvith Fred Olsen in Feb 2012 but to see Falmouth on a sunny day ith clotted cream icecream is heaven.

Hi Pugwash,Yes they were trying to get the 30million for the dredging however, the RDA
suddenly decided we couldn't have it, they haven't given up yet and are still trying all avenue's.
The Grand Princess stops off in Falmouth every year, also The Prinsdam. Jewel of the seas and seven seas Voyager just to name a few, It would be great if we could get on and of in Falmouth.
