Middle aged single ladies swarm to exotic holidays

A new breed of single women over 50 are jetting off on exotic holidays, the Daily Mail reports today (January 15th).

The group have been dubbed 'swofties', meaning single women over fifty, and reportedly number more than 600,000.

According to a new survey, older single women are flocking to exotic holiday destinations, with 18 per cent saying that travelling abroad and experiencing new cultures is important to them.

A quarter of the group say that they are having the happiest time of their lives, with many enjoying making new friends, learning new skills and living life to the full.

Personal finance expert Jasmine Birtles told the news provider: "It's great to see so many women enjoying their later years but it's also important these women take stock of their financial situation to ensure they have a nest-egg for their retirement.'"

This week, Norwegian cruise line announced that it was marketing cabins aimed specifically at single women on its new vessel Norwegian Epic.

Do you expect to see more 'swofties' on cruise holidays in 2010?

I think the bigger question is "What do NCL do to SPECIFICALLY market cabins on one ship for single women" (clean answers only please!)

Why don't more cruise companies cater for this market? The over 50s would normally expect to have better-paid jobs than they had when younger and therefore have more disposable income. Single men or women of this age would want to enjoy their leisure and should be great candidates for the cruise lines' "on-board-spend".

I reckon they ought to be targetting them for any last-minute unsold cabins with no extra cost for single occupancy.

Absolutely agree with you not that I am over 50 or a woman, but bothers me to pay £470 for a 2 nighter so why don't they discount last minute....
