Who hasn't heard of Chanel? The legendary Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was perhaps the most important designer of the 20th century.
She's well known for her signature designs, such as the chain-link quilted handbags, tweed jackets and even the little black dress.
The high-fashion house of Chanel is now led by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who has brought new energy to the French label. Lagerfeld has kept the brand in style with a ready-to-wear line extending beyond cocktail dresses and boxy tweed suits.
Besides its spring/summer and autumn/winter collections, Chanel also has a cruise collection. A cruise collection, sometimes also referred to as holiday or travel collection, represents an inter-season or pre-season line of ready-to-wear clothing, in addition to the recurrent twice-yearly seasonal collections.
The cruise collection was originally designed for wealthier customers or "more seasoned jet-setters" who went on cruises or vacationed in warmer areas during winter months. It thus offers light spring or summer clothing when weather at the points of sale often calls for winter apparel.
This season, Lagerfeld chose Venice as the setting for the Chanel Cruise Collection. This collection was inspired by Venetian high-society of the '30s, with fabrics sourced from the rich reds of the Renaissance, Fortuny prints, and lace dress.
Gabrielle Chanel herself discovered Venice in 1920, and this legendary city immersed in history became one of her favorite haunts and an endless source of inspiration. Her passion for the Baroque and her love of style and Byzantine jewelry was nourished by visits to the Saint Mark's Basilica and the schools where she admired the works of the Venetian Great Masters. The good news is that this collection is now also available in Indonesia.
The influence from Venice stands out as do the designer's revisited versions of Fortuny pleats and prints.
The pieces are pure Chanel, showing its classic elegance. Take the cream sequin-edged matching jacket and dress.
You can feel the warm tweed of the dress and jacket enhanced by shoulder pad detail.
Prints are exposed in gray mini dress with sequins on the neck, layered with a matching printed cardigan. A brown beige chiffon halter-neck mini dress has printed motives and flower accents on the cleavage set like the light-dark contrast of a great Venetian painting.
Lagerfeld has also created a sexy red lace mini dress. The unique part of this dress is the long bell sleeves which set smoothly into the armhole and flare toward the bottom.
Chanel's evening gowns are also eye-catching: long black dresses with sexy narrow scarves, flowing down the body and draped in chiffon. Another evening gown is a long body-shaped red dress with an off-the shoulder collar giving it a sexy yet elegant look.
This collection truly reflects the beauty and elegance of Venice.
