    Vigo

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how to spend a day in Vigo. We do not fancy any of the organised excursions and I can't find much about Vigo on the internet. I would love some suggested itineraries of how to spend the day.

Phil has hinted at the best of the tours, a trip to Santiago, if you have not been there, I would not write it off.

Vigo, however, is Spains premier fishing port. Jamieboy has mentioned the fishmarket. There are a number of excellent seafood restaurants in the area. My favourite is the Restaurante La Marina. Oysters are the speciality however, they do a wonderful seafood platter. There is usually a 50-50 mix of tourists and locals, always a good sign. You will not get better seafood on your cruise and the wine is reasonably priced. That, in my opinion, is what Vigo is about.

Vigo was a place we knew nothing about before our first visit.

We were lucky to be offered a free bus by that very famous Spanish department store which took us to the top of the town to the store (didn't need to go in, btw). From there we walked back down through the main shopping area and admired the very interesting street statues. Lots of nice cafes and if you like shopping the choice of shops is amazing.

When we got back to the ship we found that some people had only walked around the harbour area and were unaware of the main part of the town. It is quite a steep walk up from there but on our last visit we turned left at the dock and walked a few blocks before turning right toward the centre as the streets were less hilly.

Sorry I cannot help about excursions as we've never done any from Vigo. We've always found enough to do in the town. Hope this helps anyway.

Personally I found 'Vigo' an extremely dull town and wished I had done an excursion to somewhere! (I see not everyone agrees;))

We will be going back to Vigo for 3rd time in a couple of weeks, we usually walk along to department stores in Town which include C&A, and then we walk back down to the large shopping complex next to the port. It is very hilly but all good exercise!!!!

Thanks for telling us Malcolm , I'd hate to trudge up and down hills to find a department store ! Plenty of those at home.

Someone else described it as a bit of a dump . Why does Celebrity stop there then?

Next question , is it worth taking an excursion to Santiago?

Christiaan, I think this post by Solent Richard is worth reading if you missed it.

Obviously it's a matter of opinion whether Vigo is dull or not but there is certainly more to it than a department store.

Sorry, just edited this as I forgot to say. It's not only Celebrity that stop there most of the other cruise lines do too.
