What actually is "Elegant Casual" on Cunard

We have just booked a cruise on Queen Victoria in April 12 and have been reading up on the dress code. We have not sailed with Cunard before and was wondering if it is expected to wear a jacket for the "Elegant Casual" evenings. This would mean a jacket must be worn for each suggested dress code. Is this the case ?

A gentleman has to wear a jacket after 1800 regardless of the days dress code.

Hi, yes it does mean just that Men are required to wear a jacket but not a tie. My OH hates shirts without ties under jackets so wore a tie every night. This wasn't a problem for him, plenty of others wore the jacket but ditched the tie...Carol

Does this also apply to dining in the buffet in the evening.

Cunard states that the dress code applies to the whole of the ship!! But applying that code is a different thing i do admit that i have seen men without coats in the Lido/ Kings court after 1800 But not in the bars or Theater.

We were on QV a couple of months ago and saw passengers around the ship wearing jeans and t shirts on a number of occasions. It spoiled the ambiance on board during the evenings but no one seemed to be enforcing the dress code.

Dining in the ' self service buffet' (Lido/Kings court) in the 'evening' does not not require a jacket to be worn ..... however,a jacket is required if you decide to move out of the buffet area and 'use the Bars or Public Rooms'

Some guests are still confused with 'Alternative Dining' (for which there is a $10 cover charge, table service and is within the Lido/kings court area)
For Alternative Dining in this venue a 'jacket is required' ( or preferably the dress code of the day)

Cunard does not have any dress codes that do not require a jacket (for male guests) after 6pm. On certain cruises in hot weather (eg Caribbean/Hawaii ) there are the occasional deck buffet/party, ofcourse when it comes to jackets, common sense prevails.

For Dining in the Alternative restaurants Todd English (QM2/Q.Victoria) or Verandah (Q. Elizabeth) the dress code of the day is required (or a jacket ! )

The majority of those who choose to travel on Cunard adhere to the evening dress code. My I suggest to those gentlemen who have a problem with a jacket in the evening, you may feel more comfortable in the Golden lion pub.
