Queen Mary 2 is going down under...

Cunard has announced that the Queen Mary 2 will be based in Australia throughout 2012.

The 'Royal Circumnavigation' is expected to generate $10m for the Australian economy.

Carnival Australia CEO, Ann Sherry, said the decision was a sign of confidence in the Australian cruise market.

"This one decision will generate at least $10 million for the Australian economy as the local cruise industry remains on track to contribute more than $3 billion and carry one million Australians annually by 2020,'' she said.

Cunard president and managing director Peter Shanks said he expected strong demand for the voyage from Australian and international markets.

The mammoth voyage that will see her visit ports in five states and the Northern Territory, will be the longest time the liner has away from Southampton.

Fremantle, Adelaide and Sydney will each see two visits.

Just have to consider packing the old Didgeridoo like me Cynthia. I dont, however, think this announcement is all that it seems.

I hope you are right about the announcement Richard. We were hoping to do a transatlantic on QM2 in 2012, and back with time in New York.

Don't want to fly in either direction.!

I like Queen Victoria, but if she is going to be used instead, not an option I would consider for a transatlantic crossing.

Does this mean the Qm2 is dropping its summer schedule for 2012 in Europe completely? No med cruise, no Fjords and no short breaks from Southampton?

You may be right, but I hope not, as she is the same build as Queen Victoria, a cruise ship, not a transatlantic liner!

QV did not fare to well in November in the Bay of Biscay, compared to the old QE2 in December in a very wild Atlantic!

Lucky us ! There isn't a lot of choice for those living in Australia at the moment.
