I believe this is the same cruiseline on which I watched a TV programme at some point last year. It was a 'fly on the wall' style documentary about the actress Liz Smith (Royle Family amongst others) taking her first ever cruise. Does that ring any bells with anybody?

Hi Dave The Crown estates were given to the Goverment way back, for which the Royal family gets an income, you will find if you look back the crown estates have yielded a far greater income to the goverment over the years than the Queen gets from the goverment. The Queen used the a yacht from which a lot of business was won and a lot of jobs were created and could still be today, had the last goverment looked after our assets instead of looking after their selves.CG

HMY Britannia was in Toronto harbour several times. The last time there was no royalty on board. It was here on a trade mission and from the press reports the government and business leaders were impressed with the site of their meetings. It was reported that millions of dollars/pounds in business was generated by that one visit.

Two years ago my wife and I were thrilled to be able to tour the Royal yacht. It may seem plain to some people, especially when compared to a palace, but it is quite attractive and comfortable and to us was reminiscent of the Union-Castle Line ships. Near the entrance to the ship is a large photograph of the Prince and Princess of Wales greeting the young princes on the deck of the yacht after being separated for several days. I was present at the dock in Toronto when that now famous picture was taken.

Of course I will not criticise the British government for its decision on retiring the Royal yacht. But it is sad that the monarchs of some other European countries (Norway, Denmark, etc.) have a royal yacht and the Queen of the UK and Canada does not.

I am glad someone brought this up as most people think the money comes out of their taxes. No matter how I explain this process no one believed me. Thanks for highlighting this. I too believe the Queen should have been given a new ship as the Queen has generated more in trade for the UK than any MP. Tony took almost everything off the Royal Family as he said it cost too much and then wanted an aircraft like the USA President to fly him everywhere. He spent more in travel and security than the Queen during his time as P.M.

I think you misunderstand the difference between Queen and state. The Queen is independently very wealthy and is responsible for the upkeep of her own personal palaces. However Buckingham Palace is owned by the State and is effectively the Queen's office and place where she carries out official functions in London hence it is maintained by the State. Of course the Queen also entertains at her personal house at Windsor Castle on behalf of the nation too!

Also, the money the Royal family from the civil list historically doesn't come from taxpayers but is actually from the revenues of the Duchy of Lancaster which were always privately held by the monarch since the time of Henry IV who inherited them from his mother, Blanche of Lancaster.

Not sure, even if I could afford it. If there were a group of us It could tempt. What would happen if you didnt like any of the other passengers? Not a great deal of choice for dining companions if you did'nt gel!

PS. CG....... I do hope your ref.to the 'DUCK' was a typing error. :D
Otherwise it could be CG Heads Off.x.
Seeing as how this is my dream cruise for when I win the lottery, I shall invite members of this forum....so I'll like ALL the other passengers!
