I agree with your sentiments. She can afford to buy one.The Brittania was a money spinner not a drain on the country like the Blairs (now multi millionaires) and Browns.

Has everybody forgot that the Queen and her family does actually WORK and generates alot of income for the country through tourism etc. I think she deserves a good holiday. If there are 30 of them then thats £10,000 each for a tailored made holiday, i don't think thats bad. There are plenty of people who pay that each for a cruise that isn't tailored made to there requirements.

Seeing as how this is my dream cruise for when I win the lottery, I shall invite members of this forum....so I'll like ALL the other passengers!
    Jo.
Hope you've put the lottery on today Jo! I have. It would be a good way of spending some of it :D Now do our names go into a hat to choose the lucky ones or what? Wonder what the Captain and crew would think of this motley crew? :D:D:D

Hi everyone. As a Head of State we have a bargain with the Queen, or would some of you prefer to see Tony Blair or Gordon Brown as our President? The cost to each taxpayer is miniscule compared to other first world countries and the Queen contributes far more to the Exchequer than she takes out. Also bear in mind the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are now well in their eighties and still work long gruelling days, sometimes on foreign tours in appalling heat. How many of us would like to take on that commitment for life with no chance of retirement - ever? Also remember nobody ever asked her, she didn't volunteer for this life. Personally I would view it as a poisoned chalice, although some of the minor royals could do more to earn their status. Still if you compare even them to the way premier footballers and merchant bankers carry on and the money they earn, they look ordinary in comparison. I too have visited the Royal Yacht, we went on her shortly after she was decommissioned and moved to her permanent berth in Leith. It was only about six weeks after her last voyage and the sense of history was palpable. It was fasinating to tour her, but what a cramped little ship she is compared to the cruise ships we enjoy. I heard that on one visit to the States, some US senior naval figure was given a tour of the engine room and after said 'where's the real engine room?! Regards to you all, Jane

I believe Liz Smith sadly died a couple of weeks after the programme. It was so sad to see her eating on her own and alone in her cabin knitting a crochet hat for herself to wear.
And eager to see things at the ports of call and so pleased to be recognised by the holidaymakers.. Perhaps the programme can be repeated?

    Hi all
What about the people who had booked a cruise on this ship 12 months in advance.
Then were turfed off because HM + her dysfunctional family wanted a holiday.

    Royal Yacht Brittania

    Hi all,

Yes it was all wrong to do away with the Royal Yacht Britannia. It did generate a lot of export orders for this country and is sorely missed. However all s not lost and all of you happy people should make their way to Edinburgh where she is on permanent display and yes the interior is surprisingly small in particular some of the accommodation.

Now all of you listen up! Her Majesty an her immediate family did not volunteer to do the job that they do nor put in 18-20 hr days on a lot of occasions, especially on royal visits.

Yes the crew on a cruise ship or liner work very very hard, but I defy any of them to put in the hours that her majesty puts in most days.

No! No! get rid of a load of the useless quangos I say1 The so called government owes it to the nation to replace the Royal Yacht. It does not have to be a new ship there are plenty of suitable ships out there on the second hand market.

And finally remember that the crew of a ship gets paid and her Majesty puts in all those hours every day for nothing and yes she is indeed responsible for the upkeep of the Royal Palaces and residences.

When? I didn't know she'd died. Are you sure? I didn't read her obitury. She is one of my fav. character actresses.

On the Queen's last State Visit to Malta they arrived on the Britannia.
I think they boarded in Gibraltar but I'm not sure.
Anyway, it was impressive seeing people packing the bastions of the Grand Harbour and lots of small boats escorting the yacht into the harbour.
I think it's true that as PR goes the yacht was ideal

    Hi Morton,

I think Liz Smith is still alive, I know she had a stroke in Jan 2009 & announced her retirement later last year at the age of 87.

    Lizzie.
