I'm afraid that skooshing does not kill the Norovirus. Soap is the answer but it's not a practical method to use at the entrance to eateries and entrance to ship. Some hospitals have notices up when a ward is affected for all visitors/staff to 'wash hands' when entering. Some even remove the gel to emphasise the need to wash hands.
As Tiggertom said above - passengers have some responsibility. In fact passengers have a LOT of responsibility.
We have discussed at length in a previous thread what could be the cause of Fred.Olsen ships. It looks like their problems continue.

It does seem to be Boudicca that has a problem. I've been on Braemar 3 times and there was never an outbreak. As previous posters have said, Olsens do seem to be very strict when it comes to sanitising your hands so it does make you wonder if that ship has a carrier working on board

We had an outbreak recently on Braemar which was handled well they demisted all affected cabins and shut down hot tubs, casino etc I don't think they could have done any more. Have to say that Norovirus is rampent in the community at present our hospital has been really badly affected and we have cleaned extensively after every case. I think the virus is brought on board by unsuspecting passengers and untill the weather really warms up this type of outbreak will continue especially as a large amount of passengers are elerdly and more susceptable, although young people get infected as well.
Re Thomson ships, you've obviously never been on the Island Escape, guards on the gel stations don't pevent staff passing in and out without using it. There is no excuse for filth, any public space where selfish people don't use the facilities provided is dispicable, however, confined on board is just a recipe for an epidemic. Of course sub standard sanitation system on board e.g., broken toilets in common areas as well as cabins can certainly only serve to exaccerbate the problem.
Also as has been said before just rinsing your hands under a cold tap (a quick flick) isn't going to help after having gone to the loo.
You need to have the water as hot as you can stand rub the soap between each finger, around the palms and backs of your hands and your thumbs for at least 30 seconds then rinse for another 30seconds ~ now who honestly can say they do that? Then dried with a paper towel before applying a sanitiser the same way
See:http://www.kc-pct.nhs.uk/services/in.../sixsteps2.pdf
Then there is no point opening the door by hand, all public loos should have either automatic opening or be able to be opened by pushing with the foot leg etc. If you aren't able to do this then you should use a paper towel which should be disposed of outside the door.
I think that when a case of Norovirus is discovered on a ship then the public loos should be locked and people should be made to use their private bathrooms to cut down the spread of infection.
We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.

Couldn't agree more just what I made us do on Braemar
trouble is, even if the public facilities are shut down, people's yukky hands will still be on the banisters and door handles through out the ship
