    Hi Squiddy,

If you click on this link and follow through the threads, you should find lots of ideas:

Won a cruise and lost at sea!

it starts off mentioning the 'med' but it isn't! It's the places you are going to.

I have also posted a reply on there.

    Regards, Lizzie.

Hi, I am doing my research into ports for a cruise in November, then thought it might be worth asking for recommendations on here.

Do you have any 'must sees', 'places of interest' in the following?: Madeira, La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote. Also calling at Lisbon & Vigo.

Any information gratefully received, Many thanks. Lizzie
    Do Lisbon on your own

They bus you in and you do a walking tour with a Walkman and a map

You go at your own pace and stop when you want :D :D :D

Lizzie- we've just been to Santiago de Compostella, and it 's been one of the greatest places we've ever visited. We did it with a ship's tour, as we were late bookers, and hadn't had time to read up, although we took the cruise mainly for the chance to visit. Now we want to go again, but on our own, to really soak in the atmosphere.

Totally agree with you Spartan. The ships' dock next to the old customs house which is a 5 minute walk from the Estação Cais do Sodré, where you can catch the metro, tram or train to anywhere in or around the city (it's cheap and reliable too). We found Cascais this way when we were on the Discovery.
Other places within reach are Sintra (palaces in the sky) and Queluz (Kings palace).
Too many places to mention in the city but the Parque das Nações has an oceanarium, interactive science museum, water gardens, cable car and the torre Vasco da Gama (the last two best avoided if you don't like heights. The same goes for the elevador de Santa Justa in the Baixa.

    Hi Lizzie,
I agree with Bradbury that Santiago de Compostela is a 'must-see.' We took our cruise two years ago solely because of this tour and we were not disappointed. The cathedral was fantastic and it was so atmospheric to see the pilgrims arriving. Also it is traditional for the chocolate shops to offer you chocolates as you pass by.
As you sail into Lisbon it is worth getting up to be on the deck as you pass by the famous monuments and under the bridge. Magical in the dawn light.
    Enjoy your trip.

    Hi Jo
Did you know that Antonio Banderas, who puts a voice to the dashing Puss in Boots in the Shrek films comes from Santiago de Compostella :D
