IoS changes La Coruna for Ferrol

Just been told our IoS cruise next April is not docking at La Coruna but Ferrol instead due to a berthing clash!!

Had a quick google and can't find much about Ferrol other than it has a population of c.75000 and is a naval ship building town.

Anyone been - is there anything to do here from 13:00 to 21:00??!!

    cheers

Well this is a new one on me - I dont think I've heard of any cruise ships calling there before. I've just google mapped it - it looks like it has an interesting approach through quite a narrow waterway.

Yes, had noticed that - looks a bit like when we approached Cork.

They do have a big Easter festival, but it finishes the day before :-(

    El Ferrol

Hi Aidy..we called at El Ferrol about 3 yrs ago on Black Watch. There were 3 trips available, all between3 and 5 hours, the longest being to Santiago de Compostella, the great pilgrimage site for Catholics. At El Ferrol itself is theTorre del Hercules,a Roman lighthouse dating back to the second century. This is the only Roman lighthouse in the world that is still used for its original purpose of guiding ships into the harbour of La Coruna. The village of Betanzos near La Coruna, also hosts a Franciscan church which apparently is a "masterpiece of Galitian art"If your interested in naval history then the Naval Museum, located in the old San Campio Prison may interest you. This is a subsidiary of the Madrid Naval Museum. The exhibition consists of the remains of wrecked ships, maps, and models of sunken ships, weapons, cartography, sails and utensils used by sailors onboard ships. There is also a panel in there which has the names of all the great ships built at El Ferrol shipyards between 1751 and 1984 etched on it.And of course there are castles every few miles!Hope you enjoy your visit although don't expect a great shopping experience,as most of the shops are of the smaller variety,in cobbled streets!Happy to help... May Dupp:D:D
