They can charge £9.95 for a bottle of Becks for all I care - the price of a drink is not a factor in choosing our cruise, if I can afford a cruise, the little matter of drinks prices is insignificant. It occurs to me that to much emphasis is placed on the cost of drinks.

    Hi Dave
When people reply to threads like this should they not elaborate a bit.
Of course the price of drinks does not come into it with you,you told me on Magnifica that you dont drink.
It was the same yesterday when a poster asked how much her bar bill was likely to be as she liked a drink on holiday i think it was Bosscat who responded that he spent £150 on his cruise but said he hardly drank.not what she asked!!
    Just an observation.
Its like a few posts that asked what ship xxxxx was like and people answered in one sentence "I dont know ive never been on that ship"
Nice to meet you on the Magnifica by the way.

Sorry if I offend good friends on this site, but I'm afraid that chastising folk for taking the price of drinks into consideration shows a degree of arrogance :mad::mad:

No Bill, I don't choose a cruise on the basis of who has the cheapest drinks and I rather think the vast majority who ask/complain about prices don't either. But as per Malcolm's observation, they're a consideration, along with the ticket prices, etc. Or maybe ticket prices don't bother you either, Bill.

Remember, Dave, alcohol & drink are two different words, I've yet to see high booze prices on the same bar tariff as sensible water/soft drinks prices.

You may not be bovvered, Cynthia, but if you've nothing sensible to contribute, why take the **** out of the OP and anyone else who thinks an 80% difference in their bar bill is worth mentioning.

And David & Richard, it's not the price of a drink. We are a captive market some days and every evening

My post may be less diplomatic than JC's, but hopefully the risk of being labelled arrogant will temper future posts of those to whom apparently money doesn't matter.

    Chris (in wound-up mood)

Hi John, Nice to meet you and all the others too, a good weekend was had by most.

Anyway, perhaps I should have mentioned the word 'Alcohol' in my post, my OH still drinks alcohol, and I drink soft drinks which are equaly as expensive on board.

Dont think I have ever seen any questions on the forum regarding the price of a ice cream, a massage or the price of shore excursions, maybe wrong, but there are always questions about the price of drinks and drink packages, which to me seems to imply that it is a important factor for some in choosing a cruise.

We set ourselves a 'spends' budget when cruising, and have never yet exceeded it, we do not have unlimited funds as I'm sure most others on the forum dont, so if we cannot afford it we dont have it.

The veiws expressed in my original post were my personal opinion and were based on what we do when we look for a cruise.

    Nice post Chris,

I guess you may have succeeded in your quest to offend mostly everyone mentioned. Be happy.

    Hi Chris.
Good post, see you edited it to tone it down, what was it like first time
Of course people ask questions re drinks prices + thats what this forum is for,if people like a drink on holiday they are quite right to seek advice on this site so they can compare different cruise lines.
If you compare P+O drink prices with say RCL they are vastly different + this will influence peoples choice.
If P+O start sailing 7 night cruises from the Med watch people flock to them, away from RCL.MSC,Celebrity,Costa etc.
Its all a question of value for money for all the package.
Why would you buy your groceries from Harrods when you can get it from Tesco/Asda etc + dont say quality, its a nonsense, they get their bananas from same trees as Asda does.
My old dad had a saying "A fool + his money is soon parted".
Thanks for reply Dave, for you personally that makes sense.
Cynthia thats what i meant by posters bringing nothing to the debate.
By the way Chris i thought you was the "Alpha Male"of Magnifica, the chats in Smokers Corner + at dinner table on Saturday night was most entertaining/illuminating as was Julies

OK, I probably went a bit OTT, but it was pretty bland compared to the un-edited version :D

But no apologies - there's too much putting-down of those whose choices are dictated by cost. They have to share their cruise with the occasional oaf, they don't deserve to be given the same label.

Hi, David. Yes, it was a pretty comprehensive rant, wasn't it :D
I'm pretty sure the reason why ice-creams & spa don't figure is that for most people they're an occasional treat . And excursion costs - we have much more freedom of choice, we can (and a lot of us do) shun them and do our own thing.

Aside from the financial cost of drinks, do others have this same hang-up as me? :
I resent giving my custom to those who I feel are trying to rip me off, who try to hood-wink their prey with low headline ticket prices and high add-ons.
If I were torn between two equally-appealing cruises offering vaguely the same nett value, I’d choose P&O over RCI for that reason alone.

Same with flights. Hate Ryanair and its pompous boss. Sadly, even with all their add-ons, Ryanair usually offer best value by some margin, so I have to swallow my prejudices.
But if, as suggested by O'Leary, they ever do start charging to use the toilet, I’ll simply leave them with a damp seat. :p

I think it would be time to take that little blue pill. :D

If Fred installed a machine with little blue pills they would need to have more defibrillators and nurses onboard ;) :D

I tend to agree with Chris in this regard - whist I don't (think) I'm alchoholic, it does feature in my budgetting... I love a mojito(or 5) when away ... I love crusing... I enjoy everything about it... but to be blunt, I have to save like mad to finance perhaps 3-4 each year and "spending money" is always hard to come by... now I DO take on board folks comments re "it's comparable to what we'd pay in a 4/5* Hotel"...HOWEVER... when you bear in mind most of these ships can operate from Duty free ports - surely fair prices COULD be more widely available... if P&O and even Thomson can do it... WHY doesn't everyone? -

now where DID I put my beer? :D
