I think that’s about par for the course for the cheaper lines.

I for one would go on a cheapie line with a great itinerary, and equally importantly, a cheap price, and treat the ship as a floating B&B. I’ve done it on MSC and I would do it again as a ‘secondary cruise’.

Sorry, what's "...par for the course..." Wilba? I think you mean that ports are more important than sea days, but without being sure I can't argue with you!

Oh, and can you remind me which are the "cheaper lines" (other than MSC of course)?

What's so confusing Dave? The question set was regarding Thomson & Island cruises and the ports being more important than sea days!

Now if they are not regarded as 'the cheaper lines' then I don't know who are!

I realise the research was carried out by Thomson and Island, but I understood the topic to be about their findings in the general sense. Thanks for clearing that up!

    I like sea days.

[QUOTE=Dave, Whitstable;................ - I like a balance (Sea days and ports). I like the anticipation and to experience a sense of distance - I like to appreciate just how big the world is. ]

    Ditto.

I find myself agreeing with Dave. I must be getting soft. :D

When sailing from Southampton the first few days at sea are very relaxing - gives one time to wind down and enjoy the ship. (However, I've not been on a Thomsons or an Island Cruises ship although my very first cruise was on an Airtours ship several years ago and fell in love with cruising. We haven't had any other type of overseas holiday since.)

Ideally for us we like every other day to be a sea day as we like to go on the excursions when in port, which means we have to be organised one day then follow it with a day of doing our own thing and relaxing on board, before getting geared up to being organised again.

Two years ago we sailed on the Island Star from Palma to Brazil (20 nights I think it was) and it was an equal mix of sea and port days which was great. Having said that, four of the sea days were together in the middle and we enjoyed them so much we've booked the Thomson Destiny Tropical Transatlantic cruise in a few weeks time, which includes six sea days in a row crossing the Atlantic, then a week in the Caribbean, rather that just flying to the Caribbean and joining the ship there. During those sea days you can just switch off and be totally isolated from the world and it's worries. Magic! (Now I've gone and said all that I bet we get six days of rough weather and it'll be a real nightmare)

Our last cruise was a 12 night with RCI in June (Aegean and Eastern Med.) and we had 4 days at sea, to me a real waste.
When I first cruised the sea days bored me. However now enjoy them. I appreciate that there are three parts to a cruise: the ports of call, the on board experience and the sea itself. The ship and the sea are best experienced on a the sea days. They not only offer a contrast to the often hectic ports, they offer time to relax and explore the ship and it's facilities.

Ports are more important because the staff are rude slow and don't want to be there. And the ships aren't great.
