    norovirus

Is norovirus a real problem on cruises,we were on fred olsens boudicca in march and they were on red alert for the norovirus, apparently the 2 previous cruises on boudicca, had been plagued with it,as the 3 cruises after ours, even though the ship had to go in early for a deep cleanse,it spoils a holiday being confined to a cabin for days, have other people had this problem, and was it resolved, the crew are so good forever cleaning,i wonder why some ships get this bug,we have been on other cruises and all has been ok

Unfortunatley its a common virus which was very active last winter, it affects schools and hospiatals as well as ships. A lot of lines get it and there's very little you can do apart from being strict with hygiene particuarly around food. Theres a thread on here somewhere which you could read I'm sure someone will post a link later.

The bug does seem to be most prevalent in winter and especially among the more mature age group, hence Olsen are sometimes unlucky. Remember on a mega-ship, is 50passengers have it, probably 1,950 (or more) don't!

    Pot luck?

We've been on ten Fred Olsen cruises and never a whiff of norovirus. We've been on one P&O cruise and there was a red alert. It proves nothing - just pot luck I guess!

You ask why do some ships get this bug?
Passengers with dirty habits thats why!
I've been on ships with a Noro outbreak and never contracted it myself, probably a certain amount of luck involved but also I took a lot of care not to be contaminated.

If you have unclean or unsafe personal habits you will probably get it, and you will pass it on.

Not necessarily true the virus is airbourne so if you are in the vacinity of someone vomitting you may contract it. People of any age are at risk but the elderly and young tend to be more susceptable and often suffer more,

As already stated it sure is a common problem in all crowded places such as cruise ships and I had the misfortune of catching this on the Costa Serena in February this year. Most cruise lines do take this seriously and try to contain the virus BUT sadly some passengers simply do not take precautions such as hand washing after the toilet and also decide to eat like pigs in the buffet. Good sense and hygine though sadly can sometimes fail and like me you catch the virus for a nightmare two days.

It is not very nice, a lot of people claim they had the virus but often it is the normal stomach upset that comes with drinking water with a different mineral content.

The real thing you would not want to leave your cabin for the first couple of days as to be more than a few feet from the loo
