I live in Rome so our currency is Euro and when ordering anything online like flights, books from UK the price automatically comes up in Euro so I pay with a pre-paid Visa Electron, but I recently paid a travel agent in the UK for a cruise in August sailing from Southampton and my Euro had to be converted into pound sterline, although the Travel Agent didn't charge me commission my bank did and it was alot as I had to pay for four adults! I found out from Princess Cruises that their on board currency is US dollars so I am going to change my Euro's for US$ in Southampton (Marks & Spencers have a Bureau de Change and don't charge commission) so I'm not ripped off again.

We obtained our FairFX prepayment credit cards (1 sterling/1 euro) to avoid the high charges levied by Ryanair and they work a treat. The only problem is that they're no good if, as in several countries, cash is king! I wasn't aware that you could obtain currency from ATM's with these cards - could someone confirm that please.

You would need to look at your cards terms and conditions [possibly online] But almost all pre loaded cards allow withdrawals from ATM's , however many will charge for this option.

Presuming you can withdraw cash on your Euro card it will pay out the currency of the country you are in. So if it's not Europe you will also pay a conversion fee.

Lots of different companies sell various pre paid cards, but some of our high street TAs will charge for withdrawals from ATM's.

Thanks for your replies - I'll have to check the FAQ's on the FairFX website to find out if the fees are less than my bank charges for withdrawals. Unfortunately this isn't an accurate comparison as it also depends on what exchange rates are applied.

oO I hope we are going to be ok on our cruise this Sunday coming...

Our high street TA advised us on getting their pre paid cards (chip n Pin) which we loaded with cash and apparently they said RCL accept them..as it also says Mastercard on it..

We have also registered it as our card on the online booking for the SailPass.

Wonder if I should give RCL a call but then will they know what I mean?

    Absolutely and with no problems

The only thing we did not like was on return home, it appears the cashpassport card was waiting on RCL to release the notice we had only spent XX amount...took about a week and 2 phone calls.

Otherwise very easy to use etc
