[QUOTE=stanandmaydupp, doncaster;12221the most memorable for me was a chap who was the numberone or two Karate Master in G.B. apublished author on the same subject, having spent many years in Japan. He was also theAlbanian Consul for the U.K.,knew the Albanian President as a personal friend, had done numerous Charity Convoys to Eastern Europe had been featured on This is Your Life, been awarded theM.B.E. ;he had a Chekoslovakian girl friend/partner who was gorgeous in every way( despite being some 30yrs. his junior). He was also an extremely nice man and modest too as most of the above information came to me ,not from his own lips, but from various sources upon my return home. That was aboard aFred Olsen cruise by the way.Cheers Stan.[/QUOTE]

I don't know about anyone else, but one of the great joys of cruising is the company at your table. We usually ask for a table for 6/8,and have generally been delighted by our company. We approach our first night table with a mixture of excitment, trepidation, expectation, joy and fear.We have often pondered who we would choose to join us,what type of person, etc. if we had a free choice. The only single, simple way to define people is by job description(Irealise this is very rough and ready, and often totally misleading, but its all we've got). Here is a list of our ideal dining companions,
    BEST TABLE-Solicitor(specialising in divorce),Ladies Hairdresser(ooo the stories)Rabbi(no we're not Jewish),Journalist,Hotelier,Airline Pilot.
    WORST TABLE-Politician,Banker,Estate Agent,Insurance Salesman,Footballer,Professional Dart Player.
    BEST TABLE OF BRITISH CELEBS-Gloria Hunniford,Jo brand,Jane McDonald,Miriam Margolis,Denise Welsh,John Barrowman,Dennis Skinner,Boris Johnson,A A Gill,Micheal Palin.
    WORST TABLE OF BRITISH CELEBS-Jim Bowen,Gordon Brown,Piers Morgan,Matt Lucas,Amy Winehouse,Chrissy Hind,Charlotte Church,Cleo Lane.
    WHAT ARE YOUR BEST/WORST????
Agree totally with all your comments and choices of company - but with one surprising exception!
I would have had that opinion of Jim Bowen from his TV personna, but on a cruise a couple of years ago, he proved an intelligent raconteur and amazing Jazz performer, when he joined the late night sessions of the Gresty White band - who quite incidentally had a great string bass player.

Hi strudel, is Jim Bowen still doing the rounds on cruise ships, he was quite a regular on QE2 and I have to agree a very good performer, he certainly earned his money !!!

We spent many a happy hour drinking with him and his lovely wife Phylis, oh and some of the stories he tells !!!! lol

And I still have my "Bendy Bully" he very kindly gave me.

    Jo
Smile - everyone will wonder what you are up to

On our last cruise we shared a table for six with a couple we had met once before on a previous cruise and another two who were doing "back to back" cruising, having just completed a cruise on the same ship. Somehow someone managed, with a flap of the menu to empty a large glass of water into the lap of the lady, whose acquaintance we had just made. After profuse apologies from us all, we said how fortunate it was not a glass of red and how poor our performance must be compared with their previous table companions. We were in holiday mood and smiled a lot- they did not.
We never saw them again until the last night when we joined them on the captain's table and they explained they had decided to try the other restaurant on a table for two"for a change". So maybe we are the table companions from hell?
