Why don't they want my money ?

I have booked a cruise with Roayal Carribean Line in December 2010. I phoned them to prebook a "Romance Package" - Flowers, Chocolates Bathrobes etc for my wife as a treat for putting up with me for 35 years . I was told that I could only pay by Visa debit (but not Visa Electron!) or Credit card. I do not personally believe in Credit Cards and see no reason to change my bank in order to get a Visa debit card. I do all of my banking electronically but Royal Carribean "are unable to accept an electronic transfer of funds". More and more companies are refusing to accept cheques, so I don't use them. As far as I can see, the only way I can pay for the treat for my wife is to drive to their HQ in Kent with a bag bag full of used £5 notes in the vague hope that they might accept cash. I presume that I will not be able to pre-book any shore excursions either !.

Why on earth can't their system cope with electronic transfers (or are they on a kick-back from Visa corp?)

I am sure that closer the time and on checking in online your request will be dealt with. The money for this can be left in the Bank then you can collect the 2P interest it will earn.

VISA Electron cards can be used only in merchants' swipe machines
and in ATM's -which have similar card-reading abilities.

My two VISA Electron cards both say on the front
    " Electronic use only "

I can't even read-off the 16-digit card number over the phone
because only the first block of four numbers
and the last block of four numbers are shown!

I have no idea what the middle two blocks of numbers are
-it doesn't even show, over on the back.

Write them a crossed cheque and be done with it.
    ;)

Go onto their site, log in to your cruise, then find what you want and pay them online, it will be in pounds, The only problem being if its still along way away from the actuall cruise.. Think yoy have to wait untill its 3 months away, not sure though.
We puchased the 2 speciality restaurants, 2 tours, and a bon voyage pack for the daughters room, as it was her first cruise, A tray of strawberries in Choccy,Yummy, and a congratulations cake, all done with credit card..

    Good luck:D

If you take used £5 notes make sure they are not the old white ones. Sister took £1,000 of them to change some years ago. She always wanted to cruise, never did. What a cruise she could have afforded now! Enjoy your romantic cruise and I am sure your wife will put up with you a bit longer.

A lot of companies will not accept visa electron.
A credit card is very useful but just remember to pay off the full amount at the end of the month so as not to incur interest charges.
It comes in useful if you have a problem with goods or services they will help deal with it.:D
