Topic: Waste?

Ever since I was on a cruise going from Belfast to Greenock, which turned South instead of North, I've been watching ships doing this on AIS. Once south of the Stranraer peninsula, they seem to do a complicated figure of 8. I'm watching the Crown Princess doing that very thing right now, at 20.13, on shipsmaps AIS.
Do you reckon that this is to deal with the waste water? There must be very few other places on a round Britain/Ireland cruise which would be suitable for it to be discharged.

Been looking on the map. There seems to be a bigger space twixt Stranraer and Campbeltown, than going towards the IOM, but I suppose it depends upon water depth and flow too

I wonder if there's so much more traffic up past Stranraer? I did ask an officer when this happened on NCL Jade (quite excited, because I can see the other side of the IOM from my house), but he said he didn't know. It's the only reason I can think of for this manoevre.

It is most likely the traffic system

Just had a look.
One track is on the way into Belfast and the other on the way out, which crossover each other. Cant see a figure of eight though.

No, nor can I -yet....I remember discussing this before on this page, but we hadn't thought about the waste water then.

Just realised what you are saying. The ships destination on AIS is Greenock. Maybe they are doing a tour of the Isle of Man.

When we were on Ventura in the Caribbean, we were going from one island to another which was not very far so the captain said we had to sail west and then come back east as the ship did not sail very well at less than 10knots. We could have stayed in port in the eveing but the cynics would say that cruise ships like to have you on board so you spend your money on board rather than ashore
