I have just below shoulder length reasonably straight 'ish' hair which goes to a frizz at the slightest hint of humidity which is why I often wear it up during the day. At night time, after a shower, it's always gorgeously well behaved because of the dry air con.

I always take my hair products with me and my ghd's. Never have any trouble at all, well apart from the 'ping' effect of the humidity but stick hair up and you don't notice it. :D

If it is a formal night I just let the professionals do the job for me. I have really very fine hair. It goes frizzy every night where I have slept on it. Perms are a waste of money as they don't work. Sent over six hours in one salon to get the hair to take the perm. I do get my hair high lighted before the cruise as it does give my hair body as Maggie said. I ask the hairdresser to give me a cut that I can wash and let it dry. If I have a blow dry the hairdresser has to use tongs as well to keep the hair set,

I must be the opposite...my hair is much easier to do on board a ship...must be the water but has the opposite effect on mine. I do take my own shampoo tho. That Ausie sort for volume because despite having curly hair it is quite thin. I went to the hairdresser on one cruise and she spent the whole time commenting that my hair was 'very theen' in a sort of South African accent.

The water on most ships is usually desalinated water. ( water made from sea water and treated to remove the salt and minerals)
If you as are used to living in a soft water area you find your hair feels diffferent when say washing it in hard water. So the water on the ship may have that effect but again if you use a good conditioner it should be OK. Best take your own products that are for your own type of hair situation. Even men need different shampoo to what their wives use so take him some of his own as well. Give him the cheap BOGOF and get yourself the designer stuff:D
It isn't the condition of my hair, that is fine, it just isn't as easily manageable. I use Joico, products so not a cheap brand.

Morton, I have shoulder length hair and couldn't live without my GHD's, of course any of the men reading this won't have a clue what we are talking about.:D

I use Nioxin products.Very expensive when you use all the products your hairdresser suggests[which is why I buy it in the US] but my hair has never been in such good condition as it is now and so I'm scared of using anything else.

Glad to see some of the girls on here are usng the right products;)
To stop the 'ping' effect buy yourself some heat protector. You should never ever use ghd's or any straightening iron without using heat protector first.

Always use ghd thermal protector MM.
Still doesn't stop the 'ping' effect. However, as humidity often mean heat too, it's good to stick your hair up as it cools the neck. :D

I must have something wrong with my hair then - I cannot stand anything on it at all. Hate going to the hairdressers! Always have to say nothing on it please , no conditioner, no hairspray, no volumiser, no gloss shine spray...NOTHING. BUT they always manage to sneak something on it! I have often ended up with a nice styling, cut and blow dry and arrived home to immediately wash all the stuff off. Hairspray makes me heave... and if I have conditioner on then the next day it looks like I have stuck my head in chip fat:mad:

I agree with the Velcro rollers, they work great for me.
Sorry to hear you have such a bad time at the hairdressers. A good hair cut does not need hairspray.
    All hair types need conditioner.
Shampoo is designed to open the cuticle of the hair shaft. Shampoo opens the hairshaft to clean, and if it is not closed afterwards your hair will feel hard and tangled. You need to apply a conditioner if only for a couple of seconds to close the cuticle of the hair. This makes it smooth and allows light to pass through, then you have shiny hair. There are many types of conditioners around, from hair finishing rinses to deep masks, but basically this is what they do. Never wash without resealing your hair. You will have hard tangled dull split ends and breakage over time. Get your hardresser to use the right one for your hair.
Now I hope this helps you ladies as I am giving my trade secrets here for free! Not even a a tip required

Good girl Morton. I agree with you here as I have the same problem here in Cyprus at the moment, very high humidity 57%, hair doing it's own thing. In fact I am looking scary

I have been told that the desalinated water on ships contains chemicals and it is those chemicals that make hair go out of condition when washing it every day on board ship. It makes sense because I can't drink the tap water on a ship because it tastes funny.

I too have very thin fine hair. I keep it short in a graduated bob and have a very good hairdresser. I rarely use a conditioner at home, though on a cruise ship I have to sometimes. My hairdresser said that it makes my hair too soft. I use a styling lotion by Bumble and Bumble. My hairdresser uses it a lot when doing session styling and photoshoots for vogue etc and he recommended that for me. It certainly makes a big difference.

When I get home and have my hair cut, then it is back in good condition again.
