    Hair problems.

Do any other ladies out there have problems with their hair on a cruise ship. My hair is very thin, fine and lifeless and I can never get it how I like it while on a cruise ship. My hairdresser said it is probably washing it in different water. I don't think the hair dryers help either as they aren't as powerful as mine, I will have to take my own next time, weight permitting.

I think its a mixture of a couple of things. Most certainly the water which is much softer and also like you say the power of the hairdryer. But be aware that depending on which cruise line you are on you may need a dual power appliance that you can switch the voltage over. But even on my hot air curling brush which has dual voltage - it never seems to run out the same amount of heat.

I dont worry too much - hair always looks lovely with a couple of days sun on it to bleach it and lighten it a little.

My hair is also very fine and in addition to changes with the water I also find that sea air, whether on a cruise or at the coast, affects it.

I always take my own shampoo and conditioner with me rather than use the toiletries supplied, which helps

    Cruising my way through life!

I agree wholeheartedly with that. I always take my own too. But I must admit I like the way the sun adds a few highlights too. My hair always looks better on a cruise, probably because it's washed and conditioned every night. Mine is fairly thick and can get greasy. Must be the sea air. In fact all of me feels and looks better on a cruise. Apart from the spare tyre after the first week.

I usually use the toiletries provided thinking that 2 weeks won't hurt. But that and/or the water does curious things.
Next cruise is 26 nights. I'm taking my regular shampoos this time.

On reflection, washing it everyday might not help either - it's just simpler in the cabin shower set up than trying to keep it out of the way

    Hi jsb chesterfield,
Now you, have come to the right place here.
I am a Senior State Registered Hairdresser with the Hairdressing Council UK ( check them out on the register in the UK if looking for a good hairdresser) any hairdresser worth their wages will be registered. Anyone who isn't be wary of. It is not compulsory in the UK to be registered, so anyone can call themselves a hairdresser.
What you need to do is have a good hair cut before you go away. If you have hair like you described you need to wear it in short layers, No longer then two inches in length. Or all one length as in a bob type style and no longer ever than your jaw line. Fine hair does no work if it is in between. It can be difficult if growing out the layers but persevere and keep the outer shape short and sharp in the interim time. Next keep it well conditioned. don't forgo the conditioner because you think your hair is fine. Buy a good shampoo and conditioner for fine hair to build volume. Look out for products that keep the humidity at bay. Some hair spray have added humidity ingredients in them, read the labels.
Buy a styling product for fine hair. Again check the labels, you want one that adds volume and re constructor included if possible. Styling products are a must to achieve the correct result.
If your hair is fine the drier on board should be hot enough, but I would take a few Velcro rollers to pop in as they give volume and body without the effort of having to try to curl your hair around a brush. Pop in the roller and blast with the drier leave to cool as Voilą!
I have thick hair and like to dress it up in different styles on a cruise but I always take the Velcro rollers with me. They are better than a hot brush also as they are kinder to your hair. Weigh nothing also.
You may or not colour your hair. Colour gives fine hair more bulk also but again get it done by a good hairdresser. Never try to colour it yourself. many people do but if you do your hair will never be the same once you've done it so make sure it is done professionally. If you visit a good salon before your cruise they will be able to advise you on which products to take with you.
Never skimp on your hair as it is something you wear 24/7 and no matter what the cost, it is worth it to look good all the time. Many women think nothing of buying a pair of shoes at over £100 and wear them on a special occasion, and they don't get to see the light of day again. With your hair it is worn all day and everyday so go to the best their is in your area or travel if need be to get the right cut etc.
I have worked ,and still do in hairdressing for over 40 years and I have worked on cruise liners and at Vidal Sassoon and I still work in a five star Spa Resort so I know what I am talking about here.
Anyhow hope you don't have any bad hair days and that you have a wonderful time on your cruise.

I think it is definitely the water, I can never get my hair the same on a cruise as I do at home and I take my own products.

Within a couple of days of arriving home my hair is back to normal.

I also find my skin is quite sensitive too when on a cruise ( I take my own soap ) although I don't use soap on my face the area around my eyes is always quite tender, that has to be something to do with the water.

The water on most ships is usually desalinated water. ( water made from sea water and treated to remove the salt and minerals)
If you as are used to living in a soft water area you find your hair feels diffferent when say washing it in hard water. So the water on the ship may have that effect but again if you use a good conditioner it should be OK. Best take your own products that are for your own type of hair situation. Even men need different shampoo to what their wives use so take him some of his own as well. Give him the cheap BOGOF and get yourself the designer stuff:D

I must have something wrong with my hair then - I cannot stand anything on it at all. Hate going to the hairdressers! Always have to say nothing on it please , no conditioner, no hairspray, no volumiser, no gloss shine spray...NOTHING. BUT they always manage to sneak something on it! I have often ended up with a nice styling, cut and blow dry and arrived home to immediately wash all the stuff off. Hairspray makes me heave... and if I have conditioner on then the next day it looks like I have stuck my head in chip fat:mad:

I agree with the Velcro rollers, they work great for me.

Oh Maggiemou, my head is reeling. Being a simple chap, I just leave my darling to it, arrange to meet in the bar when she is ready. She knows if I look unsteady she has taken too long and then it's her fault if I am the life and soul of the party, dancing on the table and serenading the pretty ones. "Did you see that fool last night? my fault I took too long doing my hair"
