    Going to Copenhagen...

    Hi Angela,

I just had to reply ;)

I'm a "Copenhagener", so I naturally know a lot about our capital.

First of all, I'll tell you that Denmark is about the least corrupt society in the world, so when you pay for something, you normally get what you pay for - and the level of information is high.

Actually I recommend you use the municipal website Wonderful Copenhagen - København, billige hoteller i København, ferie København, forlystelser i København, hotel i København, hotel København, hoteler København, hoteller i København, hoteller københavn, k for both hotelreservation and inquiries about tours.

Hotels are pricey, but standard is normally quite high.

To save money, you could choose a hotel outside the city center, i.e. in "Gentofte", "Glostrup" or other places. Our commuter train service (called "S-tog" = S-Train) is working perfectly and is super easy to deal with.

Copenhagen City center (= the interesting places) is rather small compared to other cities, so you get to see a lot of sights in fx a single day - also on foot! We also have a Metro-train and buses that work fine. And It's easy to find your way. Danes are generally very friendly and helpful - and speak english very well, so don't hesitate to ask people on the streets.

Don't forget to taste danish food - including "smørrebrød" (open rye sandwich). And our dark beer is great (but alas quite expensive).

And don't forget to visit Kronborg Castle in Helsingør (Elsinore). Beautiful medieval castle about 45 km north of Copenhagen. Easy to reach by train.

Oh - and we danes have a well developed sense of humor - but that is up to you to discover ;-)

    Jesper

    Hello Jesper,
(Sorry to muscle in on your post Angela) but we will be visiting Copenhagen on a cruise in May. My last visit to your lovely City was in December, many years ago.

What key sites in the City itself, would you recommend as 'must sees' on foot, please?

    Many Thanks,

    Lizzie

    Hi Lizzie,

Well, there are a lot of places, i.e. "Nyhavn" (old port where sailors used to refill their bellies ;-), "Christiansborg" (our parliament), "Børsen". The harbour itself (but only stretching from Nyhavn towards "Langelinie" (long Promenade where cruise shops moor). "Rosenborg Castle" (old beautiful castle in the park "Kongens Have" (very nice park) where our crown jewels are kept), "Amalienborg" (the royal residence). "Strøget", the famous pedestrian street stretching from Town Hall Square to the big square "Kongens Nytorv". "Frederiksberg Have" is another park where Copenhageners stroll on sundays. Very tranquil and next to Copenhagen Zoo. From the park you'll be able to look at the elephants (free and fun). You should of course also visit "Tivoli", but as an alternative you ought to visit "Bakken", which is kind of like Tivoli, but admittance free and in the middle of a nice (and big) beech forest. In May it'll be beautiful and light green!! "Bakken" is to the north only about ½ an hour from Copenhagen City. If you take the S-train, you'll be able to see both the beach and ride in an old horse carriage (ends at Bakken main entrance), and bring along your lunch basket . I personally prefer Bakken to Tivoli (which is too pricey to me as a family father). Bakken is also the oldest amusement park in the world - 427 years old!!!

    Hi Jesper,

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to write this, appreciated. Lots of ideas there, looks like a 'busy and enjoyable day ahead'!

    This should also help 'Angela'.

    Regards, Lizzie.

You're welcome, have a nice stay. Danes are mostly very relaxed and laid back, so I guess that'll have an impact on you as well ;-)

P.S. whilst in Copenhagen, do go for a Canal Tour. You'll see a lot of the sights (incl. The Little (very little) Mermaid, You'll then also pass "Christianshavn" (hop off there - it's very idyllic and a little like old Amsterdam). The famous (notorious?) hippie social experiment "Christiania" is also situated in Christianshavn. It does look a little dangerous and messy, but no worries - I've been there with my kids. Quite interesting and very different! Also in walking distance from City Center (Town Hall Square).

    Thank you Jesper

Next year we hope to visit Copenhagen too , so your information is much appreciated .

There are two nights in port which means only one day in which to explore, so time is important to see as much as possible .

    Christiaan .

Hello Blue Angel ( lovely name!) No, will be on the Grand Princess out of Southampton on the 22nd May.

Thanks for asking the question in the first place, given me a lot of valuable information!
