    Alcohol

    Hi all.
Just for you Philayl,Wirral,,,as asked for.
    An article in today's newspaper.

Increase in male deaths caused by alcohol

The number of men dying as a result of alcohol – mostly liver disease – increased in 2010. The number of deaths among women fell.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that a total of 8,790 people died of alcohol-related causes in 2010, 126 more than in 2009. The number of deaths among men rose from 5,690 in 2009 to 5,865 in 2010, the latest year for which figures are available.
Excessive alcohol consumption is a major, but preventable, cause of premature death, accounting for almost 1.5 per cent of all lives lost in England and Wales in 2010. In 2008 the Department of Health estimated that alcohol abuse cost the NHS £2.7bn a year.
Liver disease accounted for nearly two-thirds of all alcohol-related deaths in 2010. Deaths caused by alcohol over the last decade were highest for those aged 55 to 74 and lowest for those aged under 35.
Do you drink more alcohol than recommended?
Is it a load of nonsense?
    Will we have non-smoking,non-drinking ships?
Should drinkers pay their own medical bills?
Should we refuse drinkers treatment until they can prove they are drink free.
Why do you think the 55 to 74 yr olds where the highest in drink related deaths?
Do you drink more now than you did in your youth?,if your over 55yrs.

Me?,,,i stick to the sign they used to have in Yates Wine lodges for my twice daily visit to the pub.,only joking!!!

I don't drink more than recommended. Most days I have no alcohol. My husband certainly used to, and he has really cut down.
The reason the death rate is higher in the older age group is simply that you have had much longer to destroy your liver and other organs with alcohol. Unless someone suddenly starts to drink 3 bottles of vodka a day its likely that someone over 55 who dies an alcohol-related death has been doing their body damage for a long time.

I do think attitudes to alcohol are passed on and I am quite careful with regards drinking around my two children. My parents used to make their own wine and sometimes we used to joke with my mum that it had 'gone to her knees', ie made her a bit giggly, but we never saw either of my parents drunk, and to the best of my knowledge they never have been, since they were students. DH's parents and grandparents had - and still have - perhaps a more relaxed attitude towards alcohol and the idea that having a glass of wine will relax you and therefore if you come home from work you actively should have a glass or two. Or three. I would prefer my children to grow up with the idea that alcohol is an occasional drink rather than a necessary one.

Do you drink more alcohol than recommended? No

Is it a load of nonsense? No

Will we have non-smoking,non-drinking ships? No

Should drinkers pay their own medical bills? If they have been told to stop by a Specialist & carry on Drinking then Yes.

Should we refuse drinkers treatment until they can prove they are drink free.No any addiction needs time to overcome but that amount of time should be plainly explained to the drinker & that after that amount of time the person still insists on drinking then they must face the consequences of further treatment being withdrawn.

Why do you think the 55 to 74 yr olds where the highest in drink related deaths? Its a matter of excess when you are younger but having to pay for it when you are older

Do you drink more now than you did in your youth?,if your over 55yrs NO

I don't drink most days, for several reasons. I see alcohol as 'empty calories' because I am watching my weight; if you have something too often, then it is not a treat; I prefer to save my money for more interesting things!

I don't think that drinkers should pay for medical treatment related to their drinking. If that were the case, then there would be many exclusions from free treatment on all sorts of grounds.

I can see where you're coming from, Tuggy, but where would this stop? If they hammer smokers and drinkers, how long before they propose charging for obesity-related treatment? Then for hazardous sports injuries, for those advised against taking part? Or for trauma suffered whilst driving when declared medically unfit?

Though there's an urgent need to stop wasting money, it seems to me that this is a slippery slope ..... and who would decide who "deserved" treatment or not? The mind boggles

Oh, and I'm strictly an occasional drinker - just a couple of glasses of wine with friends sort of thing

    Cheers,
    Lynn

Only 2 things in life will kill you !!!!

    #1 - Everything you eat.
    #2 - Everything you drink.

    Oh and dont smoke !!!!!!!!!!

Every time you turn the telly on some pillock is saying dont do this, dont do that, and i wont even mention "the other".
Our nation is led by killjoys who want us to sit in at night and suck rocks.

I say go out have fun, have little tipple, try some fish and chips now and again and above all enjoy yourself.

Ps - Do i remember correctly that the man who invented jogging died? .................. when he was jogging?

    Good topic, JC.

There is no doubt that were alcohol 'discovered' today it would be a class 'A' drug. It's addictive potential is higher than heroin, and of course it's much, much more toxic. There's scarcely an organ in the body that's not degraded by alcohol over time.

Trouble is, it's so ingrained in our culture that the best you can do is try to regulate it, and even then you can only regulate those whose use is controllable. The result is in practice its 'regulated' over generations. You have periods of high excess followed by years of temperance as people push back. We're in one of the high-use, excess periods at the moment, but the wheel will turn.
