Why are cruise ships full of old snobby b'stards, who think they are better than everyone else?

You have probably cruised on the wrong ships. I've never come across this problem, but would not go back to a ship whose customers thought they were better than me.

Not true ... but some of the younger people (upto say around 25) have some strange ideas and can be a pain (not all). Some people seem to go on the ship to find 'something wrong' and thats all ages .. in some cases I think they are just looking for a free upgrade or something for nothing ... they are a pain to listen too when on a cruise

not all people who cruise are snobby bstards ! grow up and face the world , you would meet all people from all walks of life on a cruise .on my last cruise i met a hells angel taking his mum n dad on holiday to a millionaire and he didnt have a snobby attitude

I personally, have not come across "snobby b.....ds" fortunately, but have met many whose lifes' work is to moan and you are correct - they are usually old ! What have you done to have people "look down their nose "at you? A litttle thing like not wearing a tie will receive "looks like daggers" on some lines.
No one should ever be made to feel uncomfortable by others actions.
