There are a substantial number of single cabins on board all of the Fred.Olsen ships - single travellers don't pay a large supplement for a twin cabin reducing the cost of your cruise. Or if you prefer they also offer shared cabins (same sex only),where you can meet new friends. Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines take great effort to ensure single travellers are looked after from the time they join the ship until the time they leave. All of the staff are there to make you feel completely relaxed and to ensure your cruise is an enjoyable one. Special activities will be arranged throughout the cruise to give you the opportunity to meet with fellow single travellers if you wish. Gentlemen hosts are on hand on all cruises to make sure single lady guests never go too long without a dance partner in the evenings.

Nice page and the single room looks lovely, but I doubt if I could get one. Anyway I am saving up and instead of taking three or four cruises next year I'll only be able to take two. Traveling solo is extremely expensive, but I'm going to do it. And I wouldn't share a cabin with a stranger even if it was free. Ugh!!

Re: Fred Olsens news about single travellers and shared cabins .....who on earth would want to share a cabin with a complete stranger?? certainly not me!!!!You might well find you are stuck with some-one very untidy...grubby in the bathroom...or heaven forbid some-one who thinks it OK to shower once a week! They may also want to follow you all over the ship like a shadow, because they are lonely. I love to dance and will often stay until the last of the music is played, sometimes that can mean 2am, what would ' an early to bed passenger ' think of that with me then taking a shower before getting into my bed? Absolutely a ' no go ' for me. I also totally agree with comments regarding the cost of single travel, far far too expensive. I have a small appetite and eat no meat so my wants are simple. I take a cruise for the social side...a love of dancing ( good exercise ) and chatting to other people. Endless offers are advertised at the moment...where are the offers for single people???

I agree completely with MacPherson of Gosport. Who in their right mind would want to share a cabin with a complete stranger. If that was the only choice, I would prefer not to go. It is unfortunate but the reason the cruise companies charge an extra percentage for single occupancy is because, in most cases, the cabin is for two persons and two persons obviously spend more money in the bars, shops, tours etc. However, having said that not many cruises sail completely full so a few cabins could be set aside each cruise for single occupancy at no increase in cost as a gesture by the cruise companies. After all, I would think it is better to have one person in a cabin than none at all. Once the ship sails the income for that cabin is lost for ever if it is empty. I am sure these cabins could be offered (possibly, say, a month before sailing)to single travellers. Just a thought, I know that will never happen.

Have you ever heard of "not being able to afford a cruise as a single passenger". I have had nearly 30 years of crusing under my belt and yes for many of them I shared with a stranger. There was the very odd occasion when things "had to be sorted out between us", but if you laid your cards on the table so to speak at the beginning of the cruise and came to some agreement ie like leaving the bathroom light on so that the last person coming in at night could see what she was doing but did not need to put on the main lights and disturb the other occupant. Some of the larger cruise lines like P&O have I am told stopped doing shares, I can assure you that 95% of the time they work. There is always the Purser's office if things were so bad that you could not bear it any longer. Not only that, have you ever been away with a friend and got so fed up with being with them 24/7 that you could scream, sharing with a stranger where you could do exactly what you want, when you want would seem like a blessing then wouldn't it?

How disappointing.........I thought that at last single travellers were going to get a fair deal! I have found that the Fred Olsen cruises do care well for the single traveller especially with the provision of gentlemen hosts. I hope all these comments will be passed on to all cruise companies who advertise single cabins.

it's all very well saying that there are single cabins available or that the discount for travelling alone is not disproportionat but in realistic terms it is. Just look at the christmas cruise on fred olsen if that is not a little over the top then what is.

I am looking for a single cabin next year, without flying? Any help appreciated, as QE2(150%) is now finishing and from the comments Fred olsen isn't the answer.

i would recommend Fred Olsen for single travellers........they are no dearer than other companies and do cater well for those on their own............. if anyone out there finds a company that does not charge extra for "singles" please let us all know!!
