Foie Gras uproar: P&O Responds...
Following your comments regarding the inclusion of Foie Gras on the menu aboard Azura, a spokesman for P&O Cruises has made the following statement:
"Foie gras remains a popular dish with many P&O Cruises customers. We are looking at a number of suppliers who can provide a sustainable and welfare-led means of production."

What a load of rubbish. I'd still boycott the restaurant. You can't force feed a goose in a good way. Thanks for the info though. Judith

I quite agree with you. The sooner this is taken off the menu the better. The only other way is to boycott the restaurant when on the ship.

Love the use of the word 'sustainable'. What a load of old tosh.

I agree, it's a total load of rubbish, there is no way suppliers can provide Foie gras in a sustainable and welfare-led means of production. Anyway, P&O claim it's still a popular dish with many P&O customers, well sod that, it's about P&O doing the RIGHT thing!

The first sentence implies P&O have been including foie gras on their menus for some time.
The second sentence implies they are still looking for a goose-friendly(!) supplier.
The conclusion is surely that P&O have been serving foie gras from non-sustainable (whatever that means), non-welfare-led suppliers but they might possibly try to be a bit nicer in future. Right.

I really can't see how this can be done in a way that is pleasant or comfortable for the goose.
I'm not sure whether the P and O spokesperson actually understands the issues here.
Surely they will do far better taking the position of removing it from their menus than placating those customers of theirs who don't worry about animal welfare issues?

Interesting to see P and O felt they had to issue a statement. I would love them to say how many portions they actually provide. I watched a program recently where they were cutting thin slices of flesh off a fish that was still alive in a restaurant, apparently it is really popular with the diners but presumably P and O would draw the line at that. If they are only looking at suppliers how is the Foie Gras they are currently providing being produced? I would be very interested to hear how anyone can produce this so called delicacy in a humane way..Carol

Hi there, Carol. I hate it when companies think that using 'buzz' words somehow makes unacceptable policies acceptable. It's like the rich and famous chartering private aircraft and then saying they've 'offset' it by giving money to plant trees.
